Turkish League, Game 11: December 16-17, 2006
There were no surprises in Week 11 of the Turkish League as the top seven teams in the standings were all victorious. Fenerbahce Ulker defeated Mutlu Aku Selcuk University 80-93 on the road thanks to an excellent fourth-quarter performance, which saw the Euroleague side outscore its opponent 15-32 to remain one game behind unbeaten league-leader Turk Telekom. Oguz Savas led Fener with 18. Jan Hendrik Luko Jagla scored 28 to lead Turk Telekom past Oyak Renault 79-61 on Saturday. Efes Pilsen had no trouble against winless Tekelspor, strolling to a 76-101 road win as Ermal Kuqo led the way with a season-high 22 points. Aubrey Reese had 25 to lead Besiktas Cola Turka to a 75-68 win over Pinar Karsiyaka in a game that came down to the last minute. Darrell Mitchel and Gerald Fitch combined for 46 points for Galatasaray Cafe Crown in a 70-80 road win at Beykoz. In other games, Mersin B.B. rode Umit Sonkol's 20 points and 16 boards to top Darussafaka 73-71, CASA TED Kolejliler beat Tofas 62-67 and Banvit edged Alpella 73-69.
Fenerbahce Ulker fell behind early as Mutlu Aku Selcuk University got off to an impressive start and led after 10 minutes 24-17 behind strong play from Brian Boddicker. Fenerbahce woke up defensively in the second period, stopped Selcuk University and got points from Hakan Demirel and Ira Clark during a 0-10 run that resulted in Fener's first lead, 34-37, on a Damir Mrsic triple. But Selcuk University fought back and regained the lead with a three from Boddicker seconds before the end of the quarter to lead 46-44 at halftime. Both teams focused on defense in the third periods, but it was the hosts' trio of Boddicker, David Dixon and Cliff Hawkins that made the difference and kept its team ahead after three periods, 65-61. With the game on the line of the fourth quarter, Mrsic stepped up in place of the injured Ibrahim Kutluay and teamed with Savas, Omer Onan, Demirel and Rasim Basak. Demirel's three put Fenerbahce ahead 75-79 with three minutes remaining. Fenerbahce held Selcuk scoreless for another two minutes and when Mrsic hit another three, the visitors led by 9 with a minute to go. From there Fener held on for an 80-93 victory. Savas lead Fenerbahce with 19 points,. Demirel added 15, Onan 14, Mrsic 13, and Basak 12. Boddicker scored 36 for Selcuk University, which also benefited from Yunus Cankaya's 16 and Dixon's 15.
Efes Pilsen trashed city rival Tekelspor 76-101 on the road behind strong play by Kuqo. Efes Pilsen struggled briefly in the first half, but led 41-49 at halftime despite a poor defensive effort, thanks to the scoring of Kuqo and Horace Jenkins. In the third quarter, Efes's tough defense reappeared and the visitors extended the gap to 25 points after 30 minutes. Kerem Gonlum and Drew Nicholas joined the scoring party in the last period as Efes won easily. Kuqo led the way with a season-high 22, Jenkins and Cenk Akyol added 14 each, Gonlum 11 and Nicholas finished with 10. Cornelius Richardson led Tekel with 19 points and Brandon McKnight added 15. Besiktas Cola Turka struggled but beat Pinar Karsiyaka of Izmir 75-68, but nevertheless improved to 8-3. Reese was the man of the match with 25 points, but it was Jamel Thomas who guaranteed the win for Besiktas from the line with 35 seconds left. Besiktas trailed 19-20 after 10 minutes, but led 35-33 at halftime thanks to Reese. Thomas finished with 13, Brook Sales had 12 and Cevher Ozer scored 10 for Besiktas while Marcus Slaughter had 18 points and 18 rebounds for Pinar Karsiyaka.
