Adriatic League, Game 14: December 16-17, 2006
Everything stays at the same atop the Adriatic League standings, as Cibona will enter 2007 as the exclusive leader with a 12-2 record, already with a two-game advantage over everyone else. Cibona beat Buducnost 89-84 behind 17 points each from Chris Warren and Davor Kus. Partizan, Zadar and FMP are now tied for the second place, each with a 10-4 record. Partizan had to battle for all 40 minutes to edge Hemofarm 70-72 in Vrsac on Saturday. Vonteego Cummings paced Partizan with 18 points, while Vladan Vukosavljevic had 19 points for Hemofarm. Meanwhile, Crvena Zvezda needed an outstanding Milan Gurovic to beat FMP 95-90 in overtime on Saturday. Gurovic had 36 points on 19 of 22 free throws while Dragan Labovic led FMP with 17 points, including a late jumper to force overtime at 79-79. Union Olimpija had less troubles than expected to down Geoplin Slovan 91-70 in the Ljubljana derby on Saturday. Manu Markoishvili paced the winners with 17 points. In other games, Bosna Asa BHT thrashed KK Split 84-64, Zagreb beat Helios Domzale 75-83 while Zadar topped Siroki Prima Pivo 79-74 at home.
Cibona is now two games ahead everyone else at 12-2 by beating Buducnost 89-84 in Zagreb on Sunday night. Kus and Warren led the winners each with 17 points, Brent Wright had 13 and Andrew Wisniewski 11 for Cibona, which trailed 44-46 at halftime. Warren and Wright shined after the break to make Cibona seal the win long before the final buzzer. Partizan survived a tough test by edging Hemofarm 70-72 in Vrsac on Saturday. Partizan improved to 10-4 while Hemofarm dropped to 9-5 in the standings. Cummings paced the winners with 18 points while Kosta Perovic had 10 for Partizan. Vukosavljevic had 19 points for Hemofarm, Stefan Markovic added 14 and Nebojsa Joksimovic 10 for the hosts. Hemofarm led 19-16 after 10 minutes and even when Cummings and Uros Tripkovic gave Partizan a 22-25 edge, free throws by Markovic helped Hemofarm to keep a 40-39 halftime lead. Cummings and Nikola Pekovic helped Partizan to get a double-digit lead, 46-56, late in the third quarter but Hemofarm's late rally brought the hosts within 68-71 already in the final minute. Predrag Drobnjak made 1 of 2 free throws to seal the win in the final seconds.
Crvena Zvezda improved to 7-7 in the standings by edging FMP 95-90 in overtime at home on Saturday. As usual, Gurovic led the winners with 36 points on 19 of 22 free throws while Pero Antic added 22 for Zvezda. Aleksandar Rasic and Labovic each had 17 points for FMP, Bojan Krstovic added 15, Zoran Erceg 13 and Milos Teodosic 10. Gurovic and Antic led Zvezda to a 48-33 halftime margin. Erceg, Labovic and Krstovic fueled the Zvezda comeback while free throws by Erceg completed it, 76-77. Vuk Radivojevic and Gurovic hit 2 free throws apiece but Labovic buried a jumper to send the game to overtime, 79-79. It all came down to the final minute, in which Antonio Burks stepped up with a critical three-point play to give Zvezda a 92-88 edge, while Gurovic sealed the win with more free throws.
