Israeli League, Game 7: December 17-18, 2006
Maccabi Elte Tel Aviv eased past Hapoel Galil Elyon 92-80 Monday to remain undefeated atop the Israeli League. Jamie Arnold had a monster double-double with 29 points and 17 rebounds and Will Bynum threw down a pair of highlight reel dunks to help the perennial champs improve to 7-0. Maccabi's lead over Ironi Nahariya grew after Ironi Ashkelon edged the second placed team 83-82. John Gilchrist led Nahariya with 21 points, but missed a tough shot that could have won the game. The win was Ashkelon's fourth in a row – three of them by a single basket. Marcus Hatten was the top scorer with 23 points. Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem worked hard for an 84-81 home win over Ironi Ramat Gan to improve to 4-3. Bnei HaSharon got back on the winning track with a 97-85 home victory over Gindi Givat Shmuel. That result marked Givat Shmuel's sixth loss in a row, while Bnei Hasharon climbed to 5-2. Rishon Lezion got 24 points each from Ryan Sydney and Reggie Moore as it topped Afula/Gilboa 76-68.
Maccabi, playing without the flu-stricken Yaniv Green and Sharon Shason, stormed the court from the start and took a 15-0 lead that made things clear. Galil came back to 18-12, with Omri Casspi, on loan from Maccabi, finished the quarter with a wild bucket making it 25-18. Galil got within 27-25, but Nikola Vujcic and Bynum took over for the hosts. Vujcic spread his passes around to finish the first half with 4 assists and Bynum finished a slash with a huge slam to give Maccabi a 53-42 lead. Arnold carried Maccabi on a 13-2 run and to put Maccabi up 22. Simas Jasaitis connected once again from behind the arc and Lior Eliyahu slammed to finish the third quarter 81-54. Eliyahu appeared to twist his ankle landing and left the game, but remained on the bench where ice was applied. Maccabi didn't blink and finished the game with an easy win. Arnold had a monster double-double with 29 points and 17 rebounds, Bynum finished with 17 points and 9 assists, Jasaitis added 14 points and Vujcic 11 points. Kenny Adeleke had a double-double of his own with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Sasa Bratic scored 17 points in defeat.
Hapoel had a tough time before beating Ironi Ramat Gan 84-81 at home. A terrible second quarter, in which Hapoel scored only 5 points, forced the Reds to chase after the visitors the entire game before collecting the win. Hapoel started well and took an 11-2 lead behind points by Meir Tapiro and Jurica Golemac, and at the end of the first quarter led 29-23. The rim became too small for Hapoel in the second quarter, when almost no shot went in. Jai Lewis carried the visiting team to a shocking 34-47 halftime lead, but the locals weren't about to give up so easily. A 16-3 run early in the third re-opened the game. However Ramat Gan's Shmulik Brenner hit twice from long range to keep Ramat Gan with a 57-65 lead entering the last quarter. Erez Markovic Ed Cota and Dror Hagag stepped up in the last quarter when Hapoel made a 14-2 run to take the lead back for good. Ramat Gan gave one last effort, but Hapoel was already on top of things on the way to an 84-81 win. Six players scored in double figures for Hapoel, led by Timmy Bowers and Hagag with 14 each. Mario Austin and Tapiro scored 13 each, Markovic had 12 and Golemac added 10. Lewis led Ramat Gan with 21 points and three players posted 13 points apiece: Curtis McCants, Torraye Braggs and Brenner.
