Polish League, Game 12: December 22-23, 2006
Donatas Slanina - Prokom Trefl Donatas Slanina drilled 10 triples – including two four-points plays – on his way to 35 points to lead Prokom Trefl Sopot to a tough 80-81 road win at Slask Wroclaw in the Polish League. Prokom remained in second place and knocked Slask from a share of the top spot as both teams are now 9-3 in the standings. The result leaves Turow Zgorzelec, which topped Polpharma Starogard Gdanski 69-75 on the road, in sole possession of the league lead at 10-2. Meanwhile Anwil Wloclawek struggled again, losing at home 74-87 against Kotwica Kolobrzeg. Polonia fell 81-72 to Polpak, despite 27 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists from Antonio Hudson. Kenny Hamilton scored 26 for the winners. In other games, Kager Gdynia handed Unia Tarnow its sixth straight defeat – the longest streak in league – by a 90-64 scoreline. Brandon Spann and Dawit Witos both scored 24 points as AZS Koszalin defeated Gipas Stal Ostrow 87-84. Energa Czarni beat Znicz Sokolow 76-66 behind Omar Barlett’s 18 points and 9 rebounds.

In one of the best games in the Polish League all season, Prokom won at Slask Wroclaw 80-81 thanks to Rashid Atkins’s lay-up with 2.2 seconds remaining. It was a spectacular performance from both sides, but the most spectacular was Slanina’s perimeter show. Slask controlled the game in the first half, started with 10-2 run and led by 8 at the half. But Prokom opened the third quarter with Slanina’s second four-points play of the evening followed a three-pointer from Atkins. It used 4-22 run to built a double-digit advantage 48-58. The visitors led until the final minute when Slask shot ahead on Dean Oliver’s three-pointer. But Prokom had the last word. With 6 seconds remaining, its coach called a timeout to prepare for the final possession and Atkins finished it brilliantly. Slanina final numbers showed 10-of-13 shooting – all from beyond the arc – and 5-of-5 from the line. Atkins added 11 points. Oliver led Slask with 18 points and 7 assists, but missed a seven-meter three at the buzzer for the win. Dominik Tomczyk added season highs of 16 points and 9 rebounds for the hosts, who dominated the boards. Slask outrebounded Prokom 30-19 (including 21-6 at the half), but Prokom overcame that.

Turow Zgorzelec won its ninth straight game, topping Polpharma 69-75. The league leaders limited their opponents to less than 70 points for the 11th time in 12 games. Thomas Kelati, who averaged just 5 points last season for Dexia Mons in Belgium, has scored over 20 points in three of his last four games. This week he had 23, including 5 triples and added 5 assists. He leads Turow with 14 points per game. Andres Rodriguez added 17 points and 6 assists for Turow, which again had problems on the boards (35-23 in rebounds for Polpharma). Patrick Okafor had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Polpharma. Anwil slumped to an unexpected 74-87 home loss to Kotwica Kolobrzeg. The hosts trailed from the beginning, but it wasn't until early in the second half that Kotwica built a double-digit lead and never looked back. Rafal Bigus and Chris Daniels both finished with double-doubles, combining for 32 points and 24 rebounds for Kotwica, which overcame 22 turnovers to win. Gatis Jahovics led Anwil with 20 points, Seid Hajric added 15 and Otis Hill 10. League leading scorer Andrzej Pluta was limited to 9 points and just 3 attempts from the field.
