Turkish League, Game 12: December 23-24, 2006
Fenerbahce Ulker earned a share of the Turkish-League lead with an 84-77 win over Tofas Bursa at the Abdi Ipekci Gym. Fenerbahce took advantage of previous league leader Turk Telekom's first loss, as both teams now sit on 11-1 records. Omer Onan was the big gun for Fenerbahce, posting 26 points. Turk Telekom lost to Banvitspor Bandirma 75-71. Efes Pilsen is one game off the lead after beating Pinar Karsiyaka in Izmir 70-85 for the team's seventh straight win. Marque Perry had an excellent game with 24 points and his Damien Kinloch added 12 for Banvit as it upset Turk Telekom. Erwin Dudley scored 16 and Muratcan Guler had 12 for Turk Telekom. Besiktas Cola Turka topped CASA TED Kolejliler 60-64 on the road in in Ankara for its biggest win this season. Meanwhile, Tekel surprised Beykoz 64-67, picking up its first win of the season. Jared Homan scored 23 points and grabbed 9 rebounds as Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi shined on the defensive end to beat Alpella 49-67. Galatasaray Cafe Crown edged Mutlu Aku Selcuk University 71-72 and Darussafaka outlasted Oyak Renault 75- 77.
Fenerbahce Ulker looked confident from the the start against Tofas. In the first few minutes, Fenerbahce rode Onan and Ira Clark as the club built a 26-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. Kaspars Kambala took over in the second period, and despite the Tofas resistance via Rasheed Brokenborough, the hosts lead 45-39 at halftime. Tofas came out of the locker rooms fighting, with Chris Booker and Major Wingate joining up with Brokenborough to put pressure on Fener, but Ibrahim Kutluay and Willie Solomon kept the hosts up 65-55 after 30 minutes. Onan was the main man down the stretch, carrying Fener over the last 10 minutes for the 84-77 win. Onan had 26 and Rasim Basak and Clark scored 9 points each for Fenerbahce. Brokenbrough scored 21 and Booker had 18 for Tofas.
Efes Pilsen remained third in the standings by trashing Pinar Karsiyaka 70-85 in Izmir for its seventh straight win. Drew Nicholas helped Efes to an 18-21 lead after 10 minutes, but Daniel Horton kept Karsiyaka in the game in the second period. Key points from Ermal Kuqo allowed Efes to take a 36-38 lead into the locker rooms. Kuqo, Cenk Akyol and Mustafa Abi were unstoppable after the break for Efes as it snatched the game away with a 14-26 third period to take a 50-64 advantage. Efes eased up in the last quarter, but never let the opponent comeback and cruised to victory. Kuqo finished with 24 points, Nicholas added 18, Akyol 14 and Abi 11 for Efes, while Horton scored 19 and Inanc Koc 15 for Karsiyaka. Besiktas Cola Turka edged CASA TED Kolejliler 60-64 in Ankara for its biggest road win of the season. Besiktas trailed 19-14 after 10 minutes, but responded well in the second period with Aubrey Reese and Cevher Ozer helping the visitors to a 30-32 lead at halftime. Marques Green and Charles Davis tried to bring CASA TED back in the third period, however Erkan Veyseloglu and Jamel Thomas were there to keep Besiktas on top 44- 48 heading into the last quarter. Davis and Erek Jay Hansen lifted CASA TED to a 60-56 lead with 2:31 to go. But Reese and Ozer were there and took charge for Besiktas again in the critical seconds and along with Erdal Bibo went on a 0-8 sprint to win the game. Thomas finished with 21 points, Ozer had 16 and Reese added 14 for Besiktas. Davis scored 23 and Hansen 12 for CASA TED.
