Spanish League, Game 14: December 22-23, 2006
Fred House Tau Ceramica One of the longest winning streaks in this season's European domestic competitions came to an end on Thursday when Akasvayu Girona downed Real Madrid 91-88 at home. Real Madrid now shares the Spanish League top spot with Tau Ceramica, both at 13-1. Marko Marinovic led the winners with 19 points. Louis Bullock and Felipe Reyes each had 22 points for Madrid. Meanwhile, Tau rallied from a double-digit deficit in the final period to edge Bruesa GBC 76-79 on the road on Thursday behind 17 points from Fred House. In one of the biggest games of the week, DKV Joventut showed its power and deep roster by beating archrivals Winterthur FC Barcelona 78-72 in Badalona on Thursday. Lubos Barton led the winners with 17 points off the bench, but as many as eight Joventut players scored in a game-breaking 21-6 run which sealed the win in the second half. Unicaja did not have problems to thrash Caja San Fernando 98-50 in Malaga, while Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas improved to 7-7 by edging MMT Estudiantes 87-89 on the road. Jimmie Hunter led the way with 25 points and the game-winning basket with 10 seconds to go. In other games, Etosa Alicante edged Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 64-61, Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket topped ViveMenorca 73-72, C.B. Granada downed Pamesa Valencia 79-77 while Grupo Capitol Valladolid bested Polaris World CB Murcia 73-60.

Tau Ceramica had to battle hard to edge Bruesa GBC 76-79 on the road on Thursday and share the first place in the standings with Real Madrid, tied at 13-1. House led the winners with 17 points, Tiago Splitter and Igor Rakocevic each added 14 while Pablo Prigioni scored 13 points and dished 8 assists for Tau, which trailed 63-52 after three quarters. Prigioni, Splitter, Rakocevic and House combined for all points in a 4-14 run which brought Tau back to life. Scola stepped up with a pair of critical basket to give Tau a 74-77 lead with 2 minutes to go while Prigioni sealed the win from the free throw line. Real Madrid registered its first domestic loss of the season, 91-88 against Akasvayu in Girona. Marinovic led the winners with 19 points. Bullock and Reyes each had 22 points for Madrid, Axel Hervelle added 12, Alex Mumbru 11 and Charles Smith 10. Madrid trailed for the best part of the game, but free throws by Hervelle and a big basket by Smith tied the game, 85-85, with a minute remaining. Marc Gasol and Marinovic combined 6 free throws in crunch time which did not allow Madrid to have any option to win the game. Unicaja improved to 7-7 and bounced back from its 52-point Euroleague road loss in Badalona by simply overwhelming archrivals Caja San Fernando 98-50 in Malaga on Wednesday. Jiri Welsch and Carlos Cabezas led the winners each with 19 points, Kostas Vasileadis added 14 and Berni Rodriguez 12 in an easy home win for Unicaja, which opened the game with a 22-0 run and never looked back.

DKV Joventut improved to 8-6 and got closer to make it to the Spanish King's Cup final eight by beating archrivals Winterthur FC Barcelona 78-72 in Badalona on Thursday. Barton led the winners with 17 points off the bench. Elmer Bennett added 13 points while Charles Gaines posted a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds for Joventut. Juan Carlos Navarro had 12 points for Barcelona, Jordi Trias and Michalis Kakiouzis each added 11 while Fran Vazquez tallied 10 for Barcelona, which dropped to 6-8 and got its last lead at 16-17. Joventut simply rolled in the third quarter, with aggressive defense looking for fast break opportunities. As many as eight different players scored in a game-breaking 21-6 run which gave Joventut a 57-39 margin late in the third quarter. Barcelona did not recover and Joventut cruised to a big road win. Gran Canaria Grupo DUnas improved to 7-7 by edging MMT Estudiantes 87-89 on the road on Wednesday. Hunter paced the winners with 25 points, Jackson Vroman registered a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds while Kornel David had 14 points for Gran Canaria, which led almost all the way since the end of the first quarter due to an outstanding Hunter and a great team effort. Estudiantes managed to tie the game at 87-87 but Hunter stepped up with the game-winning basket with 10 seconds to go. Former Granca guard Gonzalo Martinez missed a three-pointer almost at the buzzer.
