Spanish League, Game 15: December 29-30, 2006
Jackson Vroman - Gran Canaria Year 2006 came to an end in the Spanish League with a brand new leader, none other than Tau Ceramica, which now sits atop the standings with a 14-1 record. Tau edged Etosa Alicante 74-72 in Vitoria on Friday. Igor Rakocevic paced the winners with 21 points, including 4 decisive free throws in the final 13 seconds. Real Madrid dropped to 13-2 and is now second due to a 87-79 road loss against Pamesa Valencia. Ruben Douglas fired in 7 triples on his way to 26 points. Louis Bullock had 21 points for Madrid. Akasvayu Girona downed Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 97-80 to stay third at 12-2, while DKV Joventut stays fourth at 9-6 by topping Polaris World CB Murcia 77-89 on the road behind 18 points from Rudy Fernandez. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas defeated Bruesa GBC 86-73 at home on Saturday, while Unicaja topped ViveMenorca 61-77 on the road on Friday to join a four-way tie for the fifth place at 8-7. Winterthur FC Barcelona improved to 7-8 by thrashing Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 78-60 at home with 17 points from Juan Carlos Navarro. In other games, Caja San Fernando broke its four-game losing streak by beating Grupo Capitol Valladolid 79-65 while CB Granada upset MMT Estudiantes 67-81 behind 20 points and 17 rebounds from Curtis Borchardt.

Tau Ceramica climbed to the top spot with a 14-1 record by edging Etosa Alicante 74-72 in Vitoria on Friday. Rakocevic paced the winners with 21 points. Luis Scola added 19 while Mirza Teletovic had 10 for Tau. Nikola Vasic had 22 points for Etosa, which trailed 65-57 with 4 minutes to go but managed to tie the game, 69-69, when Vasic hit a triple with 12 seconds to go. Rakocevic and Larry Lewis exchanged free throws, but Rakocevic made more foul shots for a 73-71 Tau edge with 7 seconds to go. Tau opted to foul Mous Sonko, which hit just 1 of 2 foul shots, while Kaya Peker sealed the win with another free throw. Real Madrid dropped to 13-2 due to a 87-79 road loss against Pamesa Valencia. Douglas fired in 7 triples on his way to 26 points to lead 5 Pamesa players in double digits. Bullock had 21 points for Madrid, Felipe Reyes posted a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds, Marko Tomas added 13 points and Kerem Tunceri 11 for the guests, who trailed all the way. An unstoppable Douglas and a very effective Haris Mujezinovic helped Pamesa to get a 58-48 late in the third quarter. Bullock brought Madrid within 83-77 but the guests could not complete their rally. Winterthur FC Barcelona stays in the King's Cup final eight race at 7-8 by thrashing Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 78-60 at home on Sunday. Navarro led the way with 17 points, Fran Vazquez added 15, Gianluca Basile had 12 and Roko-Leni Ukic 11 for Barcelona, which led 36-32 at halftime. Vazquez and Ukic had 6 points each in a 14-0 run which broke the game for good in the third quarter.

Unicaja improved to 8-7 by downing ViveMenorca 61-77 on the road on Friday. Daniel Santiago and Carlos Jimenez each had 14 points to lead the winners. Santiago also grabbed 14 rebounds for a double-double. Berni Rodriguez had 13 points while Carlos Cabezas and Kostas Vasileadis each added 11 for Unicaja. Jimenez and Rodriguez led Unicaja to a 15-22 lead after 10 minutes. Menorca got within 27-30 late in the first half, but Rodriguez and back-to-back dunks by Jimenez and Santiago allowed Unicaja to boost its margin to 43-57 after three quarters, enough to seal a well-deserved win. DKV Joventut stays fourth at 9-6 by topping Polaris World CB Murcia 77-89 on the road also on Friday. Fernandez paced Joventut with 18 points. Charles Gaines and Lubos Barton each added 15, Robert Archibald had 12 and Paco Vazquez 11 for the winners. Marcus Fizer had 29 points for Murcia, which trailed all the way. Joventut opened the game with a 7-17 run which Barton capped with a triple and kept a safe margin for good. Three-pointers by Vazquez and Fernandez made it a 20-point game, 55-75, early in the fourth quarter, enough to seal the outcome. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas keeps tying for the fifth place at 8-7 by defeating Bruesa GBC 86-73 at home on Saturday. Jackson Vroman led the winners with 18 points, Jimmie Hunter had 17, Kornel David added 13 and Roberto Guerra 10 for Gran Canaria, which led 47-39 at halftime. Vroman exploded after the break, scoring 5 points in a 17-4 run which made it a 20-point game, 63-43, and sealed the outcome.
