Spanish League, Game 16: January 6-7, 2007
Fran Vazquez Winterthur FC Barcelona It was a weekend full of records in the Spanish League, with just one game away from reaching the cut for the Spanish King's Cup final eight. Three teams - Tau Ceramica, Real Madrid and Akasvayu Girona - are mathematically in, two others - Unicaja and DKV Joventut - are virtually in while as many as five others will fight for the three remaining spots next weekend. Tau Ceramica stayed first at 15-1 by topping Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 76-88 on the road in front of a record-breaking audience of 15,414 fans, the biggest crowd ever in a Spanish League game. Igor Rakocevic led the winners with 26 points. Real Madrid edged DKV Joventut 95-91 at home on Saturday. Madrid improved to 14-2 while Joventut dropped to 9-7. Louis Bullock came off the bench to lead the winners with 26 points on 4-of-5 three-pointers. Meanwhile, Fran Vazquez posted a triple double of 11 points, 10 rebounds and a record-breaking 12 blocks to make Winterthur FC Barcelona edge Grupo Capitol Valladolid 58-65 on Sunday. Unicaja and Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas improved to 9-7 by getting respective wins against MMT Estudiantes and Etosa Alicante. In other games, Bruesa GBC beat Pamesa Valencia 84-72, Alta Gestión Fuenlabrada topped Akasvayu 81-75, Polaris World CB Murcia defeated ViveMenorca 79-84 while Caja San Fernando edged CB Granada 100-104 behind 28 points from Branimir Longin.

Tau Ceramica improved to 15-1 overcame a heavy atmosphere to beat Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 76-88 on the road in front of a record-breaking audience of 15,414 fans, the biggest crowd ever in a Spanish League game. Rakocevic led the winners with 26 points, Zoran Planinic added 18, Fred House had 15 and Luis Scola 13 for Tau. House capped a 3-12 run with a triple which gave Tau a 35-43 lead at halftime. Even when Tau led all the way from that moment, Bilbao Basket got within 72-76 with 3 minutes to go. A big basket by Scola and a three-point play by House sealed the win for Tau down the stretch. Real Madrid held off a wild rally to edge DKV Joventut 95-91 at home on Saturday. Madrid improved to 14-2 while Joventut dropped to 9-7. Bullock came off the bench to lead the winners with 26 points on 4-of-5 three-pointers and 12-of-12 free throws. Felipe Reyes added 21, Axel Hervelle had 13 and Charles Smith 10 for Madrid. Lubos Barton had 15 points for Joventut, Ferran Laviña added 14, Charles Gaines 13 and Paco Vazquez 11 for the guests, who lost Rudy Fernandez with a sprained ankle midway through the game. Reyes and Bullock shined in the opening half and helped Madrid to get a 54-36 margin at the break. A three-pointer by Bullock gave Madrid its biggest margin, 70-46, after 27 minutes. Barton, Gaines and Lavila ignited the Joventut comeback and free throws by Laviña got the guests within 93-89. Bullock sealed the win from the free throw line.

Winterthur FCB needed a record-breaking exhibition from Vazquez to edge Grupo Capitol Valladolid 58-65 on the road on Sunday. Vazquez scored 11 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had a Spanish League record 12 blocks, to record the seventh triple-double in the competition since stats started to be recorded in 1989. Juan Carlos Navarro had 24 points for Barcelona, which led 19-33 at halftime due to an outstanding Vazquez. A three-pointer by Jaka Lakovic gave Barcelona a 34-49 lead, and even when Valladolid got within 56-62 already in the final minute, Navarro sealed the win from the free throw line. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas got closer to make it to the Spanish King's Cup by downing Etosa Alicante 75-84 on the road on Sunday. Jimmie Hunter led the way with 20 points, Kornel David had 13 and Roberto Guerra 11 for Gran Canaria. Guerra capped a 2-10 run which put Gran Canaria ahead, 44-55, early in the third quarter. The guests boosted their margin to 51-65 midway through the fourth quarter and cruised to a key road win. Unicaja also improved to 9-7 by simply overwhelming MMT Estudiantes 92-52 in Malaga. Marcus Faison led the winners with 18 points, Jiri Welsch added 17, Iñaki De Miguel had 12 and Kostas Vasileadis 11 in an easy home win for Unicaja, which led 45-33 at halftime, improved its margin to 68-41 after 30 minutes and never looked back.
