British League, Week 14: January 5-7, 2007
The Guildford Heat are the British Cup champions! The Heat lifted their first-ever Cup trophy by edging the Scottish Rocks 81-78 in Birmingham on Sunday. Brian Dux led the winners and earned MVP honors with 21 points. Chad McKnight added 20 for the Heat, while Sterling Davis had 21 for the Rocks, which lost their third BBL Cup final in four years. The Heat led 59-43 after three quarters and even when the Rocks got within 69-65, Dux scored his team's final 7 points to win the official title in the British season. “Brian Dux is creating things for himself and making good decisions. When you talk about on-court generals he’s a great one, I wouldn’t swap him for anyone,” head coach Paul James said after the game. In the British Championship, the Newcastle Eagles topped the Sheffield Sharks 79-90 on Friday behind 29 points from player-coach Fabulous Flournoy. Also on Friday, the Milton Keynes Lions edged the Chester Jets 86-85. Tony Windless had 18 points for the Lions, including the game-winning free throw. London United beat the Leicester Riders 78-77 on Friday with a game-winning basket by Tarrick Johnson. On Saturday, the Plymouth Raiders beat the Riders 88-92 on the road behind 22 points from Gaylon Moore, while the Worcester Wolves thrashed London United 92-77 with 20 points from Sergio Rodriguez.
