Adriatic League, Game 16: January 5-7, 2007
The first weekend of games after the New Year's break came without many surprises along the way, as Cibona keeps leading the standings at 13-3 by thrashing Siroki Prima pivo 97-58 in Zagreb on Sunday behind 20 points from Jurica Zuza. Partizan and FMP keep tying for the second place, each with a 12-4 record. Partizan downed downing Union Olimpija 76-90 in Ljubljana on Saturday. Predrag Drobnjak paced the winners with 18 points while Kosta Perovic posted a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds for Partizan. Meanwhile, FMP played close to perfection in offense to beat Bosna Asa BHT 76-91 in Sarajevo on Saturday. Aleksandar Rasic led the way with 26 points while Dragan Labovic added 21 points. Both players combined for 11-of-11 two-pointers, 4-of-5 three-pointers and 13-of-13 free throws. Hemofarm broke Zadar's nine-game winning streak with a 91-86 home win behind 26 points from Milenko Topic, while Crvena Zvezda improved to 9-7 by thrashing Geoplin Slovan 102-79 on Friday. In other games, Zagreb overwhelmed Split 73-102 while Buducnost needed overtime to edge Helios 94-96 with a game-winning layup from Miljan Pavkovic.
Partizan showed all its power by downing Union Olimpija 76-90 in Ljubljana on Saturday. Partizan ties for the second spot at 12-4 while Olimpija dropped to 7-9. Drobnjak paced the winners with 18 points. Perovic posted a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds, Vonteego Cummings had 11 points and Luka Bogdanovic 10 for Partizan. Ivica Jurkovic had 22 points for Olimpija, Ender Arslan added 14 while Teemu Rannikko and Marko Milic each tallied 11 for the hosts. Perovic and Drobnjak each had 9 points in the first quarter to give Partizan a 21-30 lead. Olimpija did not surrender, however, and a three-point play by Rannikko gave the hosts a 41-40 edge. It didn't last long, however, as Bogdanovic had 10 points in a game-breaking 3-18 run which gave Partizan a 20-point lead, 55-75, with 8 minutes to go, enough to seal the outcome. FMP improved to 12-4 and registered a quality road win by downing Bosna Asa BHT 76-91 on Saturday. Rasic led the way with 26 points on 6-of-6 two-pointers, 3-of-4 three-pointers and 5-of-5 free throws. Labovic added 21 points without missing a shot while Zoran Erceg had 16 for FMP, which fired in 31 of 46 shots and 20 of 22 free throws. FMP led 17-28 after 10 minutes and never looked back, as a layup by Rasic boosted the guests' margin to 65-85 midway through the final period, enough to add a difficult road win.
Cibona stayed atop the standings with a league-best 13-3 record by thrashing Siroki Prima pivo 97-58 in Zagreb on Sunday. Zuza led the way with 20 points, Davor Kus added 18, Chris Warren and Marin Rozic had 11 apiece while Brent Wright and Andrew Wisniewski each tallied 10 for Cibona, which led 49-28 at halftime and boosted its margin to 71-38 at the end of the third quarter, enough to rest its main players and its decisive Euroleague game against Partizan. Hemofarm had to battle hard to beat Zadar 91-86 and improve to 11-5 in the standings. Milenko Topic led the way with 26 points, Predrag Suput added 19, Nebojsa Joksimovic had 13 while Aleksej Nesovic and Vladan Vukosavljevic each tallied 10 for Hemofarm. Topic fired in 3 triples in a 14-0 run which allowed Hemofarm to get a 50-37 halftime margin. Zadar rallied after the break and got within 62-61, but Topic and Nesovic rescued the hosts and Zadar was never again within striking distance. Crvena Zvezda improved to 9-7 by thrashing Geoplin Slovan 102-79 on Friday. Milan Gurovic led the winners with 19 points, Pero Antic added 18, Petar Popovic 17, Tadija Dragicevic 16 and Mirko Kovac 14 for Zvezda, which led 57-31 at halftime and cruised to an easy home win.
