Turkish League, Game 14: January 5-7, 2007
Fenerbahce Ulker stayed paced with Turk Telekom Ankara at the top of the Turkish League by winning for the eighth straight time to improve to 13-1. Ira Joe Clark scored 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to lead Fener to an 85-76 victory over Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi. Turk Telekom topped Pinar Karsiyaka 68-59. Efes Pilsen remained in third place – just one win behind Fenerbahce and Turk Telekom – after it came up big late in the game to down local rival Beykoz 70-82. Horace Jenkins led the way with 22 points and 5 assists. Mutlu Aku Selcuk University surprised Besiktas Cola Turka 84-80 in overtime as the ULEB Cup side fell further off the top spots in the league. Gerald Fitch scored 20 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished 7 assists to lead Galatasaray Cafe Crown to a 58-87 road win over Alpella on Friday. In other games, Tekel won for the second time this season, beating Darussafaka 79-64, Tofas edged Banvit 71-72 and CASA TED Kolejliler took an 82-96 decision from Oyak Renault.
Fenerbahce recorded an 85-76 victory over Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi. Clark and Omer Onan helped push Fener to a 29-13 lead after 10 minutes with the home team shooting 6-for-7 from downtown. Damir Mrsic's three and a Semih Erden dunk extended the lead to 39-20 midway through the second period, before the teams headed into the locker rooms with Fenerbahce leading 49-31 at halftime. After the break, Kaspars Kambala, Clark and Onan kept the difference the same as Fenerbahce went into the last quarter up 70-49. Mersin was able to close the gap a bit in the final period, but Fenerbahce coasted to victory. Clark scored 19 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, Onan added 14 and both Kambala and Erden finished with 10. Umut Tinay had 20 points and Umit Sonkol added 14 for Mersin.
Efes Pilsen struggled nearly for three periods against Beykoz, but managed to take the game 70-82 on the road against its Bosphorous opponent. A lack of motivation on defense saw Efes trail 24-21 at the end of the first quarter. The home team continued to lead with former Efes center Mutlu Demir, Cihad Sahin and Philip Goss looking good. Kenton Paulino stepped up in the second period as Beykoz led 39-38 at halftime. Efes woke up in the third quarter with Jenkins and Drew Nicholas running the show. Jenkins's triple gave Efes the lead late in the period and it stood at 53-57 after 30 minutes. Experience played a key role in the last quarter as Efes took control of the game for good. Kerem Gonlum, Jenkins and Nicholas completed their mission to destroy Beykoz on their home court and Efes won the game 82-70. Jenkins led the way with 22 points and 5 assists, Gonlum had 21 points and 14 rebounds and Nicholas added 18 points and 7 assists.
Besiktas was shocked at Konya by Mutlu Aku Selcuk University, losing 84-80 in overtime. The visitors lead most of the game and had a 4-point lead with a minute left in regulation, but Brian Boddicker and Kendall Dartez leveled the score at 71-71 to send the game into the overtime. Boddicker, Dartez and recently signed playmaker Bora Sancar hammered the favorites in the overtime to seal the win. Boddicker scored 19 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the home team, Sancar scored 14 and both Dartez and Ibrahim Ozturk added 13 each. Brook Sales scored 27 points while both Aubrey Reese and Donnell Harvey made 14 each for Besiktas.
