Baltic League, Phase 2, Game 1: January 5-7, 2007
Matthew Nielsen Lietuvos Rytas Lietuvos Rytas started the second stage of the Baltic League season in style by recording back-to-back wins over Barons and Siauliai to move into first place of the Division I table with 2-0 record. Zalgiris Kaunas also started on the right foot by edging ASK Riga 91-89, while Ventspils had a bitter debut, topped 82-69 by Siauliai. Matt Nielsen led L. Rytas against Barons by scoring 15 points in the 55-76 victory. Arturas Jomantas pulled down 8 boards, Roberts Stelmahers dished 7 assists and Mindaugas Lukauskis scored 10 points. Against Siauliai, a 28-17 run to start the second half launched L. Rytas to a 93-70 win. Nielsen scored 16, Jomantas 15 and Andrius Slezas 14 for the winners. Zalgiris led 51-35 at halftime, but went down to the wire to beat ASK Riga in the end. Vytenis Jasikevicius connected on a free throw to make it 91-89 and Curtis Millage of Riga missed the potential game-winning triple. Marcelinho Machado chipped in 20 for Zalgiris, while Tanoka Beard amassed 15 with 10 rebounds, and Jonas Maciulis 15 with 5. Siauliai led 38-35 at halftime and increase its advantage over Ventspils to 60-52 after 30 minutes and controlled the game in the last quarter. Arvydas Ceoulis led Siauliai with 24 points, while Ventpsils had 15 by Justin Love and 11 from Kaspars Cipruss.
