Portuguese League, Game 17: January 10, 2007
Lusitania Angra PM provided the biggest upset in the Portuguese League in this round by edging Ovarense Aerosoles 69-72 on Wednesday. Lusitania improved to 9-6 while Ovarense stays atop the table at 13-2. Joao Figueiredo led 5 Lusitania players in double figures, while Gregory Stempin had 21 for Ovarense. Benfica got close to the top spot and improved to 12-3 by edging Barreirense 72-76 on the road. Ashante Johnson paced the winners with 20 points, while Joao Gomes had 25 points for Benfica. It all came down to the final seconds, in which free throws by Miguel Minhava sealed the outcome in the final seconds. Porto Ferpinta stays third and moved up to 10-5 by topping Belenenses Hyundai Lusifor 87-100 in overtime also on Wednesday. Nuno Marcal had 26 points for Porto while Rashad Phillips added 21 for the winners. Diogo Carreira had 30 points for Belenenses. Phillips beat the buzzer with a three-pointer to force overtime, 81-81, and had 20 points in the extra period to make Porto win the game. Last but not least, Casino Figueira Ginasio bested CAB Madeira 81-72 behind 16 points each from Ricky Woods and David Mallon.
