Louis Bullock - Real Madrid The Spanish League regular season reached its halfway mark this weekend, which means we all now know which eight teams will fight for the King's Cup title in the final eight in Malaga next month. Real Madrid, Tau, Akasvayu Girona and Unicaja were already qualified and are now joined by DKV Joventut, Caja San Fernando, Winterthur FC Barcelona and Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas. Real Madrid regained the top spot in the Spanish League by beating Tau Ceramica 82-92 in Vitoria on Saturday, breaking the hosts' 17-game winning streak in all competitions. Louis Bullock paced the winners with 23 points on 5-of-6 triples and Charles Smith added 22, while Serkan Erdogan had 17 points for Tau. Meanwhile, Winterthur FCB survived a make-or-break battle to reach the King's Cup final eight by thrashing CB Granada 87-66 at home behind 21 points from Juan Carlos Navarro. Unicaja improved to 10-7 and keeps tying for the fourth place by thrashing Polaris World CB Murcia 59-82 on the road, while Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas dropped to 9-8 but still made it to the King's Cup final eight despite a 78-82 road loss against Grupo Capitol Valladolid. Caja San Fernando advance to the King's Cup final eight for the first time in three years by downing Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 77-68 in a winner-take-all situation for both teams. DKV Joventut had no problems to beat Bruesa GBC 80-68 in Badalona. In other games, MMT Estudiantes edged ViveMenorca 73-67, Akasvayu Girona topped Etosa Alicante 68-62 while Pamesa Valencia bested Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 79-67.

Real Madrid took the big showdown in the Spanish League this weekend by beating Tau Ceramica 82-92 in Vitoria on Saturday. Bullock paced the winners with 23 points on 5-of-6 triples. Smith added 22, Axel Hervelle 16 and Marko Tomas 10. Erdogan had 17 points for Tau, Luis Scola and Igor Rakocevic each added 15 while Zoran Planinic had 12 for the hosts. A 0-12 run which Bullock capped with a layup gave Madrid a 38-51 margin right after the break. Tau did not surrender, however, as Scola and Rakocevic brought the hosts back in the game, while a big triple by Planinic and another basket by Erdogan tied it at 74-74 with less than 6 minutes to go. Kerem Tunceri fired in a critical three-pointer while Bullock added his trademark stop-and-pop bomb from downtown to give Madrid a 80-86 edge with 90 seconds to go. Free throws by Hervelle, Smith and Bullock allowed the guests to get a tough road win and hand Tau its first loss since November 11. DKV Joventut improved to 10-7 by downing Bruesa GBC 80-68 in Badalon on Sunday. Rudy Fernandez and Elmer Bennett led the way with 13 points apiece while Lubos Barton added 11 for Joventut. Bruesa led most of the way in the first half and kept a 42-43 edge at the break. A 13-0 run which Fernandez capped with a triple gave Joventut a 57-49 margin, and even when Bruesa got within 62-59, Bennett hit back-to-back triples to put the hosts ahead for good.

Winterthur FC Barcelona got a spot in the Spanish King's Cup final eight by thrashing CB Granada 87-66 at home. Barcelona improved to 9-8 and made it to the top 8 of the standings right in time. Navarro led the winners with 21 points, Jaka Lakovic added 20, Roger Grimau had 13 while Fran Vazquez and Michalis Kakiouzis each added 10 in an easy home win for Barcelona, which led 47-39 at halftime. Navarro and Kakiouzis shined after the break, as Barcelona boosted its margin to 63-45 and never looked back. Unicaja improved to 10-7 and keeps tying for the fourth place by thrashing Polaris World CB Murcia 59-82 on the road on Sunday morning. Daniel Santiago led the way with 14 points, Berni Rodriguez added 13 while Florent Pietrus had 11 for Unicaja, which used a 1-13 run to break the game in the first quarter. Unicaja got a massive 24-46 margin at halftime, while back-to-back triples by Rodriguez boosted it to 44-70 midway through the final period. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas dropped to 9-8 but still made it to the King's Cup final eight despite a 78-82 road loss against Grupo Capitol Valladolid. Joseph Gomis had 19 points for Valladolid. Jimmie Hunter led Gran Canaria with 18 points, Kornel David had 16, Jackson Vroman 12 and Sitapha Savane 10. Gran Canaria trailed 59-70 after three quarters but managed to get within 78-80 with 21 seconds to go. Hunter missed a couple of critical shots, while Oscar Yebra sealed the win for Valladolid with free throws.
