Spanish League, Game 18: January 20-21, 2007
Luis Scola Tau Nothing changed atop the Spanish League standings, as Real Madrid and Tau Ceramica keep tying for the spot, each with a 16-2 record. Real Madrid beat difficult Caja San Fernando 82-71 in Palacio Vistalegre on Sunday morning. Charles Smith led 6 Madrid players in double digits with 15 points. Meanwhile, Tau had less troubles than expected to down Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas 102-85 in Vitoria behind 29 points on 12-of-14 two-pointers from Luis Scola. Akasvayu Girona stays third at 14-4 by edging Unicaja 89-90 in unbelievable fashion. Carlos Cabezas had 19 points for Unicaja, which led 86-82, with 90 seconds to go. Girona found a go-to guy in Dainius Salenga, who had 8 points in those 90 seconds, including the game-winning layup with 2.4 seconds to go. Winterthur FCB topped MMT Estudiantes 80-73 behind 19 points from Jaka Lakovic, while Rudy Fernandez had 6 of his 15 points in the final 18 seconds to make DKV Joventut beat CB Granada 78-71. In other games, ViveMenorca edged Grupo Capitol Valladolid 72-79, Bruesa GBC bested Polaris World CB Murcia 83-64, Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada beat Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 74-61 while Etosa Alicante bested Pamesa Valencia 75-74.

Real Madrid had less troubles than expected to beat Caja San Fernando 82-71 in Palacio Vistalegre on Sunday morning. Smith led 6 Madrid players in double digits with 15 points. Axel Hervelle, Kerem Tunceri and Louis Bullock each added 13, Felipe Reyes had 12 and Marko Tomas 10, including a nine-meter bomb at the end of the first quarter. Another eight-meter running triple by Tunceri gave Madrid a 43-32 halftime margin. Second-chance baskets and fast breaks allowed Madrid to extend its margin to 66-45 late in the third quarter, enough to seal the outcome. Tau Ceramica added yet another home win by thrashing Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas 102-85 in Vitoria also on Sunday morning. Scola led the winners with 29 points on 12-of-14 two-pointers. Igor Rakocevic and Tiago Splitter each added 19 while Pablo Prigioni had 14 for Tau. Sitapha Savane had 14 points for Gran Canaria, Kornel David 12 while Jim Moran and Jimmie Hunter each chipped in 11 for the guests. Scola had 12 points in a 23-6 opening run which allowed Tau to get a 34-18 margin after 10 minutes. Tau soon boosted its margin to 45-21 and never looked back, keeping a safe margin for good.

DKV Joventut impoved to 11-7 by topping CB Granada 78-71 in Badalona on Sunday morning. Lubos Barton paced the winners with 25 points, Rudy Fernandez posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds while Andrew Betts had 12 for Joventut, which trailed 63-65 with 4 minutes to go. Three-pointers by Elmer Bennett and Fernandez rescued Joventut, and even when Granada got within 72-71, Fernandez followed free throws with back-to-back dunks to seal the win in the final seconds. Winterthur FC Barcelona moved up to 10-8 by downing MMT Estudiantes 80-73 at home on Saturday. Jaka Lakovic paced the winners with 19 points, Juan Carlos Navarro added 16, Michalis Kakiouzis had 12 and Roger Grimau 11. Barcelona trailed for the best part of the opening three quarters, but a big basket by Navarro gave the hosts a 52-51 edge after 30 minutes. Kakiouzis and Lakovic shined in the final period to keep Barcelona ahead for good. Unicaja dropped to 10-8 due to a 89-90 road loss against Akasvayu Girona in unbelievable fashion. Arriel McDonald had 15 points for Akasvayu. Carlos Cabezas led Unicaja with 19 points, Carlos Jimenez added 13, Berni Rodriguez, Florent Pietrus and Marcus Faison each had 12 while Iñaki de Miguel scored 10 points for Unicaja, which led 86-82, with 90 seconds to go.
