Zalgiris Kaunas took the big showdown in the Baltic League this week by downing archrivals Zalgiris Kaunas 78-88 on Saturday in front of 10,500 fans at Siemens Arena to become the only unbeaten team in the second phase of the competition. Zalgiris improved to 2-0 while Rytas dropped to 2-1. Marcelinho Machado led the winners with 21 points. Tanoka Beard posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, Paulius Jankunas had 15 points while Jonas Maciulis pulled down 10 boards for Zalgiris. Andrius Slezas had 23 points for Rytas while Arturas Jomantas and Joao Paulo Batista each added 12. Zalgiris led 19-23 after 10 minutes and used a 0-8 run to extend its margin to 40-46 at halftime. Machado shined in the third quarter to boost Zalgiris' lead to 56-68 after three quarters. Rytas managed to get within 68-72, but three-pointers made the difference for Zalgiris down the stretch. Ventspils improved to 1-1 by downing ASK Riga 83-93 on the road on Thursday. Eddie Shannon paced the winners with 24 points, Dalron Johnson added 19 and Kaspars Cipruss 14. Ventspils controlled the game since the early going, and even when Riga tied it at 77-77, Shannon and Johnson took over in the final 5 minutes to make the perennial Latvian champs get their first win in this round. Ventspils dropped to 1-2 due to a 65-74 home loss against Barons/LU on Saturday. Curtis Marshall had 15 points for Barons, while Pavel Veselovs also had 15 for Ventspils.
