Portuguese League Cup: January 18-21, 2007
Lusitania Angra Patrimonio Mundial is the Portuguese Cup League champion! Lusitania became the Taca de Liga champion by downing Benfica 80-73 in the title game on Sunday. Mike Williams led the winners with 21 points while Willie Taylor added 19 for Lusitania. Ashante Johnson had 22 and Ian Stanback 15 for Benfica, which led 69-70 with 2 minutes to go. A three-pointer by Williams ignited a game-breaking 9-0 run highlighted by Taylor's basket-plus-foul, as Lusitania got a 78-70 lead with 31 seconds to go and went on to lift the Cup League trophy! Lusitania advanced to the final by edging Porto 75-72 in the first semifinal on Saturday. Taylor led the winners with 22 points while Rashad Phillips had 20 for Porto. Meanwhile, Benfica simply overwhelmed Queluz Sintra Patrimonio Mundial 84-52 behind 17 points from Ashante Johnson. The quarterfinals provided big thrillers along the way. Lusitania edged Barreirense 73-72 with a game-winning layup by Brown with 22 seconds to go. Porto beat Belenenses Montepio Studio Residence 80-79 with a game-winning free throw by Marques Houtman with 7 seconds remaining. Benfica had to battle hard to rally from a double-digit margin and beat Casino Figueira Ginasio 66-64 while Queluz upset Ovarense Aerosoles 63-69 behind 21 points and 13 rebounds from Jamie Kendrick.
