Adriatic League, Game 18: January 20-21, 2007
Union Olimpija provided the biggest score in the Adriatic League this week by downing current leaders Cibona 91-69 in Ljubljana on Sunday. Olimpija overcame its current situation and improved to 8-10 while Cibona dropped to 14-4 but stays atop the standings. Teemu Rannikko led the winners with 23 points while Davor Kus led Cibona with 20. Three other teams - FMP, Partizan and Hemofarm - tie for the second place, each with a 13-5 record. Partizan topped FMP 100-91 in Pionir Arena on Saturday. Milenko Tepic paced the winners with 20 points and Nikola Pekovic added 16. Branko Cvetkovic led 5 FMP players in double digits with 17 points. Meanwhile, Hemofarm downed Helios Domzale 78-88 on the road on Sunday. Predrag Suput led the way with 22 points while Milenko Topic rejoined the team and had 12. As usual, Milan Gurovic provided yet another scoring exhibition with 39 points on 9-of-10 two-pointers and 12-of-12 free throws to make Crvena Zvezda beat Zadar 108-90 in Belgrade on Sunday. In other games, Bosna ASA BHT topped Geoplin Slovan 90-72, Siroki Prima Pivo defeated Split CO 70-83 while Zagreb hosts Buducnost on Tuesday.
Partizan confirmed its good moment by beating FMP 100-91 in Pionir Arena on Saturday. Tepic paced the winners with 20 points, Pekovic added 16, Luka Bogdanovic and Uros Tripkovic each had 11 while Vonteego Cummings scored 10 points for Partizan. Cvetkovic had 17 points for FMP, Zoran Erceg added 16, Aleksandar Rasic 14, Milos Teodosic 12 and Dragan Labovic 11. FMP led 15-26 late in the first quarter and even when Partizan got within 32-34, Rasic, Erceg and a final triple by Teodosic gave the guests a 41-51 halftime margin. FMP still led 74-82 with 7 minutes to go, but a 13-0 run that Pekovic capped with a dunk put Partizan ahead for good. Bogdanovic, Pekovic and Tepic sealed the win from the free throw line. Both teams are tied at 13-5 and join a three-way tie for the second place in the league board along with Hemofarm, which beat Helios Domzale 78-88 on the road on Sunday. Suput led the winners with 22 points, Milos Borisov added 16, Miljan Rakic had 14 and Topic, back in the team after being sidelined for disciplinary reasons scored 12 points for Hemofarm, which led 63-65 with 7 minutes to go. Topic and Rakic stroke from downtown in a 0-10 Hemofarm run which sealed the win, as the guests held off a late Helios rally.
Union Olimpija showed why it is considered a one-of-a-kind team by thrashing Cibona 91-69 in Ljubljana on Sunday. Rannikko led the winners with 23 points, Ivica Jurkovic added 18, Hasan Rizvic had 16 while Manuchar Markoishvili and Sandi Cebular each tallied 13 for Olimpija. Olimpija led 26-18 after 10 minutes while Rannikko and an outstanding Cebular helped the hosts to boost their margin to 51-36 at halftime. Nothing changed after the break, as Olimpija kept a safe margin and cruised to a convincing road win. Crvena Zvezda improved to 10-8 by downing Zadar 108-90 in Belgrade on Sunday. Gurovic led the winners with 39 points on 9-of-10 two-pointers and 12-of-12 free throws. Tadija Dragicevic added 23 while Petar Popovic had 12 for Zvezda.
