Israeli League, Game 8: January 21-22, 2007
After a nearly four-week break, the Israeli League returned to action on Sunday and Monday without any real surprises. Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv and Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem scored road wins at Maccabi Rishon Lezion and Hapoel Galil Elyon, respectively. Maccabi climbed to an 8-0 record, while Hapoel improved to 5-3. Bnei Hasharon became the first team to win at Nahariya this season as it moved to second place in the league with a 6-2 record. Nahariya led 48-35 at halftime, but was limited to only 26 points in the second half before losing 74-79. Cookie Belcher had a huge game to lead Bnei Hasharon with 24 points. Ashkelon's four-game winning-streak was snapped by Ironi Ramat Gan 91-83 behind 23 points from Torraye Braggs and 20 by John Allen. Afula/Gilboa won for the first time at home, 91-79 over last place Maccabi Givat Shmuel. Jermaine Hall led the locals with 25 points and 9 rebounds.
Playing without the ill Will Bynum, Maccabi went on the road to face Rishon Lezion, where the champs lost twice last season. This time the story was different as the visitors earned an easy 73-89 win. Rishon started strong with an 8-0 lead, but Maccabi replied with 11 points in a row. Reggie Moore was everywhere on court for the locals, but Maccabi had Tal Burstein and Simas Jasaitis to take a 19-22 lead at the end of the first quarter. Halfway through the second quarter Ryan Sydney put Rishon back on top 29-28, but Jasaitis's three-pointer put Maccabi ahead once more. Nikola Vujcic and Noel Felix scored the last 13 points of the half to give Maccabi a 31-46 halftime advantage. Moore brought Rishon back to minus 12 before Jaime Arnold stepped up and extended Maccabi's lead to 20+. Rishon cut some points off in garbage time and lost by only 16. Arnold was the top scorer for Maccabi with 20 points, Jasaitis finished with 19, Vujcic added 11 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists and Felix had 10 points. Moore led Rishon with 31 points, Sydney added 15 and Oded Sha'ashoua finished with 12 points.
Hapoel made a long trip to face Galil Elyon, but had a happy return after a big 90-100 road win. The locals missed their big man, Kenny Adeleke, but put up a big fight before Hapoel made a blitz in the closing minutes. Hapoel started with a 0-6 lead, but Galil woke up to grab an 11-9 margin. Dror Hagag had another great game to carry Hapoel on a 3-12 run to finish the first quarter up 16-25. New signing Gili Mosinzon came off Galil's bench to bring his team back in the game with 11 points in the first half, but Hapoel still held a 37-45 lead at half time. Tre Simmons, another new signing for Galil, was hot everywhere on the court and in the second half he was joined by forward Sasa Bratic, but Hapoel had Terence Morris flying up in the air on the way to a 65-69 third quarter lead. Hapoel was down by one after Bratic, who scored 19 points in the second half, made a three pointer, but Mario Austin was unstoppable. The Jerusalem big man carried his team to a 9-point lead and Hagag made a great play to keep Galil far behind. Austin finished the game with 30 points on 12-of-14 shooting. Timmy Bowers and Hagag had 16 each. Simmons led Galil with 29, Bratic stopped at 21 and Robert Rothbart had a big game with 12 points.
