Spanish League, Game 19: January 27-28, 2007
There is a exclusive leader atop the Spanish League standings, none other than Real Madrid, with improved to 17-2 by edging ViveMenorca 79-83 on the road on Sunday. Louis Bullock led the way with 21 points. Tau is now second with a 16-3 record due to a 95-90 road loss against Polaris World CB Murcia. Stephane Risacher led 5 Murcia players in double digits with 25 points. Luis Scola had 22 points for Tau. DKV Joventut moved up to 12-7 and is now fourth beating MMT Estudiantes 75-83 on the road on Saturday. Lubos Barton led the winners with 19 points while Elmer Bennett added 17. Winterthur FC Barcelona needed a late effort from star guard Juan Carlos Navarro to beat Pamesa Valencia 65-74 on the road on Sunday morning. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas improved to 10-9 by downing Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 90-79 at home on Saturday behind 15 points each from Jimmie Hunter and Sitapha Savane while Unicaja dropped to 10-9 due to a 80-60 road loss against Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket. In other games, Etosa Alicante upset Caja San Fernando 71-79 on the road, Akasvayu beat Bruesa GBC 89-77 while C.B. Granada thrashed Grupo Capitol Valladolid 90-73.
Real Madrid tops the Spanish League table with a 17-2 record by edging ViveMenorca 79-83 on the road on Sunday. Bullock led the way with 21 points, Marko Tomas had 15, Kerem Tunceri added 14 and Charles Smith 13 for Madrid. Marino Bazdaric had 14 points for Menorca, that led 78-77 with 2 minutes to go. Madrid shined in defense when it mattered, while a big basket by Axel Hervelle and free throws by Bullock, Raul Lopez and Tunceri sealed the win down the stretch. Tau dropped to 16-3 due to a 95-90 road loss against Polaris World CB Murcia. Risacher led 5 Murcia players in double digits with 25 points. Scola had 22 points for Tau, Igor Rakocevic added 19, Mirza Teletovic 18 on 6-of-11 three-pointers and Ender Arslan 11 for the guests. Tau trailed all the way in the second half but a triple by Teletovic brought the guests within 86-84 with less than 2 minutes to go. Risacher had 5 points and an assist in the final 90 seconds, enough for Murcia to seal a big home win. Winterthur FCB improved to 11-8 by downing Pamesa Valencia 65-74 on the road on Sunday morning. Navarro led the winners with 22 points, Denis Marconato had 12 and Jordi Trias 11. Barcelona led 66-56 after three quarters but went scoreless from almost 7 minutes. Navarro stepped up with free throws, a seven-meter triple and a huge fallaway jumper to win the game for Barcelona.
DKV Joventut is now fourth in the standings with a 12-7 record by beating MMT Estudiantes 75-83 on the road on Saturday. Barton led the winners with 19 points, Bennett added 17, Charles Gaines 14 and 10 rebounds while Rudy Fernandez scored 11 for Joventut, which led all the way in the second half. Even when Estudiantes got within 56-59 with 8 minutes to go, Paco Vazquez, Gaines and Barton shined when it mattered to make Joventut add a valuable road win. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas improved to 10-9 by downing Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 90-79 at home on Saturday. Jimmie Hunter and Sitapha Savane led the winners each with 15 points. Kornel David added 14 while Mario Fernandez and Roberto Guerra had 12 apiece for Gran Canaria. Andres Miso had 34 points for Fuenlabrada, which trailed 54-38 at halftime but got within 57-52 soon after the break. Savane, Guerra and David fueled a 10-0 run which allowed Gran Canaria to keep a safe lead for good. Unicaja dropped to 10-9 due to a 80-60 road loss against Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket. Martin Rancik had 19 points for Bilbao Basket. Carlos Jimenez and Daniel Santiago each had 11 points for Unicaja while Carlos Cabezas and Berni Rodriguez each had 10 for the guests, who got within 50-47 midway through the third quarter but collapsed in the final period.
