Turkish League, Game 16: January 27-28, 2007
Efes Pilsen Istanbul continued its red-hot run by dumping Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi 71-58 in Turkish-League action. Marcus Haislip returned to action after his nine-game ban for fighting with Mursad Turkcan of Fenerbahce and led the way with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Turk Telekom continues to lead Efes and Fenerbahce Ulker for first place by one victory after topping Tofas 80-63. Chris Booker paced Turk with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Fenerbahce overcame Pinar Karsiyaka 88-73 thanks to Damir Mrsic's 19 points. Besiktas ColaTurka strolled past Oyak Renault 63-79 on the road as Aubrey Reese came through with 17 points. In other games, Galatasaray Cafe Crown defeated Tekel 80-70, Banvit trumped CASA TED Kolejliler: 87-63, Darussafaka outlasted Mutlu Aku Selcuk University 77-80 and Beykoz beat Alpella 84-79.
Efes started the second half of the regular season with a comfortable home win over Mersin. Drew Nicholas, Mustafa Abi and Haislip got Efes off to a quick start as the hosts raced out to 10-0. Jerry Johnson and Umit Sonkol woke up Mersin and cut the difference to 6 points at the end of the quarter, 22-16. Nicholas stepped up for Efes and carried the team during a 21-10 second quarter for a 43-26 halftime advantage. Jared Homan and Umut Tinay tried to close the gap in the third quarter, but Haislip and Ermal Kuqo were in charge for Efes as the home side went into the last quarter up 58-41 ahead. Efes didn't let Mersin any closer and cruised to the 71-58 win. Nicholas led Efes with 24 points and 5 assists and Kuqo added 16 points and 5 rebounds. Johnson scored 14 points and dished 4 assists for Mersin, while Umit Sonkol had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Fenerbahce Ulker recorded one of the easiest wins of the week by defeating Pinar Karsiyaka of Izmir 88-73 at the Abdi Ipekci Hall in Istanbul. The game was stopped for 15 minutes due to crowd trouble after one Karsiyaka fan jumped onto the court in the fourth quarter in an attempt to fight the Fenerbahce supporters. The security stopped the fan, but then Fenerbahce supporters run onto the court to catch the fan as both teams' players tried to stop them. Luckily there were no injuries and the game was finished after the delay. Fener started the game quickly as Mrsic led the hosts to a 26-18 lead after 10 minutes. Pinar Karsiyaka levelled the game in the second quarter, but Mrsic, Ibrahim Kutluay and Hakan Demirel kept Fenerbahce ahead 43-35 at the half. Midway through the third quarter, Serhat Cetin's three-pointer cut the difference to 55-52, but Kutluay and Kaspars Kambala held Fenerbahce up again for a 66-58 advantage. Fenerbahce controlled the game also in the last quarter through Eddie Basden and Oguz Savas and went on to win 88-73. Mrsic lead Fener with 19 points, Kutluay had 18 points, Kambala 15 and Turkcan finished with a double-double of 11 points, 13 rebounds plus 4 assists. Serhat Cetin scored 16 and Alvin Snow, Inanc Koc and Umut Yenice added 13 each for Karsiyaka.
Ivan McFarlin had 9 points and 14 rebounds in a key role to lead Besiktas past Oyak Renault. Oyak Renault won the first quarter 20-12 thanks to strong play by Charles Bennett and Atlan Erol. Oyak increased the lead through the same duo and scored a last second three-pointer by Serhat Buker to go into the locker rooms ahead 40-29. That was too much for Besiktas and the visitors put up an impressive start to the third quarter. Reese, McFarlin and Cevher Ozer scored one after another and Erdal Bibo's foul shots tied the game at 47-47. Arda Vekiloglu made it 49-50 with two minutes to go in the third period and Besiktas wouldn't trail again. Besiktas led 51-55 at the end of the third quarter and used an 11-26 sprint to extend the lead in the last quarter. Ozer finished with 10 points and Donnell Harvey added 11 for Besiktas while Bennett finished with 17 for Oyak Renault and Andre Woolridge had 13.
