Spanish League, Game 20: February 3-4, 2007
A solid leader stay atop the Spanish League standings right before the King's Cup final eight, as Real Madrid improved to 18-2 and now has a two-game edge over everyone else by by thrashing CB Granada 97-72 at home on Sunday. Charles Smith fired in 6 triples on his way to 22 points while Axel Hervelle added 17 for Madrid. Tau Ceramica dropped to 16-4 due to a 67-66 road loss against Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada despite 15 points from Pablo Prigioni. Gran Canaria showed it is ready to shock everyone in the King's Cup final eight next weekend by downing Winterthur FCB 80-70 in overtime at home on Sunday. Both teams tie for the fifth spot in the standings, each with a 11-9 record. Jimmie Hunter led Gran Canaria with 15 points, 10 in the extra period. Unicaja improved to 11-9 by thrashing Bruesa GBC 67-86 on Sunday behind 16 points from Iñaki De Miguel, while DKV Joventut showed its power by thrashing Akasvayu Girona 92-76 in Badalona on Sunday. Rudy Fernandez led 6 Joventut players in double digits with 18 points. In other games, Etosa Alicante topped Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 77-62, Grupo Capitol Valladolid beat MMT Estudiantes 83-78, Pamesa Valencia edged Polaris World CB Murcia 83-75 while Caja San Fernando bested ViveMenorca 91-84.

Bullock and Smith shined early while a three-pointer by Kerem Tunceri gave Madrid a 33-14 lead after 10 minutes. Granada never recovered, as Madrid kept a double-digit lead all the way until the final buzzer. Tau Ceramica dropped to 16-4 due to a 67-66 road loss against Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada. Frankie Solana led the winners with 21 points. Prigioni had 15 points for Tau, Luis Scola added 14, Igor Rakocevic 12 and Tiago Splitter 11. Tau trailed 64-57 with 90 seconds to go, but a 1-9 run that Scola capped with a basket gave Tau a 65-66 edge. Jorge Garcia hit free throws with 17 seconds to go, while a final shot by Splitter danced around the rim but did not fall in. Unicaja improved to 11-9 by thrashing Bruesa GBC 67-86 on Sunday. Iñaki De Miguel led the way for Unicaja with 16 points, Carlos Cabezas had 14 and Daniel Santiago 13. Unicaja led 27-52 at halftime and did not have trouble to add an easy road win.

Kornel David hit free throws to force overtime, 64-64, at the end of regulation. Hunter had 10 points in the extra period, including a final triple to seal the win in style. DKV Joventut stayed fourth at 13-7 by thrashing Akasvayu Girona 92-76 in Badalona on Sunday. Rudy Fernandez led the winners with 18 points. Paco Vazquez, Lubos Barton, Robert Archibald and Charles Gaines each added 11 while Ricky Rubio had 10 for Joventut. Gaines added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Rubio, Gaines and Fernandez shined in the second quarter to give Joventut a 42-27 halftime lead. Joventut opened the third quarter with a 11-2 run and never looked back.
