Russian League, Game 17: Jan. 30 - Feb. 4, 2007
CSKA took the big Moscow showdown in the Russian League this weekend by edging cross-town archrivals Dynamo 75-80 on the road in the Russian capital on Sunday. CSKA stays atop the standings with a 13-1 record while Dynamo is now fourth at 10-4. Theodoros Papaloukas paced the winners with 20 points on 8-of-11 two-pointers and 6 assists. Trajan Langdon and Aleksey Savrasenko each added 14 while J.R. Holden had 12 for CSKA. Lazaros Papadopoulos paced Dynamo with 24 points on 10-of-15 two-pointers. Antonis Fotsis added 14, Dmitri Domani 13 and Bojan Popovic 12. A 8-0 run in which Papadopoulos had 6 points gave Dynamo a 27-26 edge after 10 minutes. CSKA improved its defense while Holden and Papaloukas allowed the guests to get a 38-45 edge at halftime. Even when Dynamo trailed all the way since that moment, a close basket by Papadopoulos got the hosts within 71-73. Papaloukas shined with a three-point play and added free throws to seal a big road win for CSKA. Unics improved to 13-2 by edging University Surgut 78-83 on the road on Saturday. Saulius Stombergas led the winners with 19 points, Ksystof Lavrinovic added 15, Yahor Meshcharakou 14 and Jarod Stevenson 13 for Unics, which trailed 71-67 with 6 minutes to go. Ksystof Lavrinovic and Stombergas fueled a key 2-9 run which allowed Unics to complete its comeback down the stretch. In other games, University thrashed Sibirtelekom 111-88 on Wednesday, Standart registered back-to-back losses, 63-92 against Spartak St. Petersburg and 61-85 against Ural Great. CSK VVS-Samara topped Spartak Vgues 75-85 on Friday while Lokomotiv Rostov bested Dynamo Moscow Region 52-63.
