Portuguese League, Game 22: February 6-7, 2007
Ovarense Aerosoles stays unstoppable in the Portuguese League and improved to 17-2 in the standings by edging Belenenses Montepio SR 78-83 on the road on Tuesday. Gregory Stempin led the winners with 22 points, Ben Reed added 16 and Cordell Henry had 14 for Ovarense, which led all the way in the second half. Belenenses got within 75-78 but Shawn Robinson and Henry sealed the win in the final 32 seconds. Benfica took the big showdown of the week and stayed second with a 16-4 record by topping Porto Ferpinta 76-82 on the road on Wednesday. Ian Stanback led the way for Benfica with 19 points. Ashante Johnson added 17 while Leroy Watkins, Carlos Andrade and Miguel Minhava each had 12 for the winners. Nuno Marcal had 21 points for Porto, that trailed 28-44 at halftime but got within 67-72 with 3 minutes to go. Andrade and Stanback sealed the win for Benfica down the stretch. In other games, Queluz Sintra PM rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Barreirense 74-64 behind 29 points from Jamie Kendrick while Lusitania Angra PM topped CAB Madeira with 22 points from Willie Taylor.
