Russian League, Game 18: February 7-10, 2007
Melvin Booker - Khimki Unics Kazan improved to 14-2 and now leads the Russian League standings by downing Lokomotiv Rostov 89-72 at home on Friday. Darjus Lavrinovic paced the winners with 22 points, Sergei Chikalkin added 13 and Ksystof Lavrinovic 11 for Unics, that led 48-28 at halftime and kept a safe margin until the final buzzer. Khimki provided the biggest surprise in this round by edging CSKA 75-74 at home on Saturday. Khimki improved to 12-4 while CSKA dropped to 13-2. Melvin Booker and Kelly McCarty led the winners each with 13 points, Vitaliy Fridzon added 11 and Vladimir Veremeenko had 10 for Khimki. Trajan Langdon had 17 points for CSKA while Anton Ponkrashov and Matjaz Smodis each added 13. Booker had 5 points for Khimki in a 11-5 opening run, while a hyperactive Fridzon gave the hosts a 25-15 lead late in the first quarter. Langdon led the CSKA comeback, as Aleksey Savrasenko tied it at 33-33 after 16 minutes. Maciej Lampe and Ruben Wolkowyski allowed Khimki to keep a 43-41 halftime edge. Even when a three-pointer by J.R. Holden gave CSKA a 45-50 lead, an outstanding Gianmarco Pozzecco allowed Khimki to tie it at 58-58 after 30 minutes. The game was six lead changes in the final period - until Booker and McCarty had back-to-back baskets for a 75-7 Khimki edge. Langdon scored for CSKA, but Holden and Theo Papaloukas missed in the game's final possession. Dynamo Moscow improved to 11-4 by downing Spartak Vgues 83-68 at home on Saturday. Antonis Fotsis led the winners with 22 points, Lazaros Papadopoulos added 19, Sergei Bykov had 12 while Sergey Monya posted a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds for Dynamo. Papadopoulos, Fotsis and Bykov combined for 17 points in the opening quarter to give Dynamo a 23-13 lead after 10 minutes. Dynamo soon boosted its lead to 42-24 but Spartak managed to get within 45-37 at halftime. The guests did not get closer, as Dynamo extended its margin to 62-48 after 30 minutes and never looked back. In other games, University Surgut topped Spartak Vgues 81-72 on Wednesday, Spartak St. Petersburg edged Dynamo Moscow Region 70-66 on Saturday while Ural Great downed Samara 89-94 behind 22 points from Stanislav Makshantev.
