Spanish King's Cup final: February 11, 2007
Winterthur FC Barcelona is the Spanish King's Cup champion! Barcelona lifted its 20th King's Cup title by downing archrivals Real Madrid 53-69 in the title game on Sunday, in a bright end to what was a fantastic four-day tournament full of thrillers and outstanding basketball in Malaga. Jaka Lakovic led the winners with 16 points, Juan Carlos Navarro added 14, while Jordi Trias and Roger Grimau each had 10 points for Barcelona. Trias earned MVP honors, as a new star is born in European basketball. Louis Bullock had 15 points for Real Madrid, Felipe Reyes 14 and Axel Hervelle 10. Barcelona used outstanding defense to break the game for good in the first half. Madrid hit just 5 of 31 shots in the opening half, while Navarro, Trias and Lakovic led Barcelona to a 15-31 lead. Madrid never got close enough to threaten, but did manage to get within 35-44 late in the third quarter. Roko-Leni Ukic led a 0-9 run which sealed the outcome long before the final buzzer.
Navarro opened the scoring with a coast-to-coast layup, igniting a 1-10 run that Jaka Lakovic capped with consecutive three-pointers. Barcelona dominated the game early through its outstanding defense, as Madrid missed its first 6 shots until Bullock nailed a long jumper. Trias and Fran Vazquez dunked, while Madrid kept missing one shot after another, forcing coach Joan Plaza to call timeout. Navarro followed a layup with a triple while Lakovic added a long jumper to cap a 0-11 run and give Barcelona a 5-21 lead after 10 minutes. Charles Smith dunked to get Madrid going and Reyes added a layup, but Navarro fired in one from downtown and added free throws for a 9-26 Winterthur FCB lead. Barcelona's defensive numbers spoke by themselves, as Madrid hit just 4 of its 30 opening shots - going 0-for-14 from three-point range until Bullock fired in one from downtown to get his team within 15-29. Free throws by Roger Grimau gave Barcelona a 15-31 halftime lead. Vazquez shined with a back-to-back dunks after the break to make it a 20-point game, 15-35. Hervelle tried to ignit the Madrid comeback with a three-point play, starting a 9-0 run in which he had another basket and that Bullock capped with a layup to get his team within 24-35. Barcelona called timeout, as Lakovic and Trias rescued their team for a 27-42 lead after 26 minutes. Reyes had 5 unanswered points and Hervelle nailed a triple, but Ukic banked in a seven-meter shot to keep Barcelona way ahead, 35-47, after 30 minutes. Barcelona opened the final period with a 0-6 run and cruised to win yet another King's Cup title, as Madrid never recovered.
