Turkish League, Game 19: February 10-12, 2007
Horace Jenkins scored his only basket of the game with 1.8 seconds remaining to lead Efes Pilsen over Besiktas Cola Turka 60-59 in a breathtaking game at the Abdi Ipekci on Saturday in Istanbul. Jenkins's triple kept Efes in the race for first place in the Turkish League with Turk Telekom, which remained atop the table by defeating Galatasaray Cafe Crown 82-92 on the road. Efes and Turk Telekom clash next week with plenty to play for. Fenerbahce Ulker improved to 17-2 – also one win behind Turk Telekom – by outlasting Darussafaka 69-63 as Mirsad Turkcan clocked in for 15 points plus 16 boards. Charles Bennett posted 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead Oyak Renault to a 64-80 road win at Tekel. Tofas defeated Beykoz 83-76 behind Rasheed Brokenborough's 29 points. In other games, Mersin Buyuksehir Belediye beat Pinar Karsiyaka 83-76 and Mutlu Aku Selcuk University edged Banvit 69-70. The only remaining game from the 19th round between CASA TED Kolejliler and Alpella takes place on Monday.
In the always hot Istanbul derby between Efes and Besiktas, only Drew Nicholas looked good in the first quarter, as the hosts led 18-16 after 10 minutes. Besiktas leveled the game in the second period with Donnell Harvey scoring inside and took the lead just before halftime on the strength of a Baris Ozcan three-pointer from the left corner that made it 28-29. Ivan McFarlin's dunk early in the second half gave Besiktas its biggest lead, 28-34, but two Nicholas three-pointer and a Marcus Haislip dunk helped Efes tie the game at 38-38. Besiktas regained the lead through Ozcan and McFarlin and went into the last quarter up 44-46. Efes's shooting woes continued in the fourth quarter and Besiktas was in position for a big win. However Ozcan missed two free throws with his team up 57-59 and 12 seconds remaining. Efes had one last possession and Jenkins, who was 0-for-8 in all shots till that point, stepped up with a game-winning triple. Nicholas finished with 17 points, Kerem Gonlum had double double of 12 points plus 13 rebounds and Haislip scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for Efes. Harvey scored 12 points, Ozcan 11 and McFarlin scored 6 points and grabbed 12 boards for Besiktas.
Fenerbahce Ulker was also victorious in a derby, albeit a much-less intense one against Darussafaka. After a poor shooting performance in the first quarter, the home team lost control inside and Darussafaka scored consecutive points inside with Oktay Yilmaz and Erdem Turetken to take a 31-34 halftime lead. Fenerbahce picked up its defensive intensity in the third quarter, while Turkcan, Omer Onan and Semih Erden helped the club take a 47-46 lead with 10 minutes to go. In the fourth period, Mrsic's three-pointers along with Oguz Savas and Turkcan inside killed the Darussafaka hopes. Turkcan was the star with 15 points and 16 rebounds, Damir Mrsic added 14 points, Erden had 11 points and 7 rebounds, and Onan scored 10. Mike Jones led Darussafaka with 17 points, Henry Dobie and Oktay Yilmaz scored 11 each and Erdem Turetken had 7 points, but grabbed 13 rebounds.
Turk Telekom remained in first place after defeating Galatasaray Cafe Crown 82-92. Jan Hendrik Jagle scored all of his 16 points in the second half – including 12 off of three-pointers – for Turk Telekom. Muratcan Guler led Telekom with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists, Derrick Alston had 16 points and 10 rebounds, Erwin Dudley had 11 points and 9 rebounds, Tutku Acik made 14 points plus 11 assists and Haluk Yildirim had 11 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for Telekom. Gerald Fitch lead Galatasaray with 24 points, Darrell Mitchell had 22 points and Tufan Ersoz nailed 17.
