Benetton Treviso is the Italian TIM Cup champion! Benetton outlasted VidiVici Bologna 65-67 at the PalaMalaguti in Bologna on Sunday to win its third Italian cup in the last four years. Terrell Lyday scored 15 and Spencer Nelson posted 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Italian champions. The game was close throughout, with the biggest lead being 7 points to VidiVici late in the first half. It came down to the closing minutes, but Benetton turned up the defense and made its free throws down the stretch to secure the victory. Marcus Goree added 14 and Nikos Zisis 12 for David Blatt's Benetton. Travis Best led VidiVici with 15 points and 4 assists, Vlado Ilievski added 14 and Guilherme Giovannoni 12.
The game opened with the teams neck-and-neck and trading baskets for several minutes. A 0-8 run saw Benetton take a 13-19 lead late in the period, before Dusan Vukcevic's basket made it 15-19 after 10 minutes. Giovannoni stepped up as Bologna scored the first 9 points of the second period to take a 24-19 lead. Marco Mordente's triple swung the lead back in Benetton's favor, but another 9-0 run gave VidiVici a 38-31 advantage. Zisis's three-point play helped Benetton cut the gap to 40-36 at halftime. VidiVici remained on top throughout the third quarter, with Ilievski's three-point play putting Bologna ahead 49-42. Goree helped Benetton get back to 54-52 with 10 minutes left. The race for the cup continued throughout the fourth period, with five ties and three lead changes taking place before Goree put Benetton up for good in the last two minutes. The power forward made three free throws during a 0-6 run to make it 61-64. Lyday matched Best's free throws to keep Treviso ahead. Then Best missed a triple for the tie, Nelson grabbed the rebound and made one from the line to ice the win and give Benetton another major title to celebrate.
