Israeli League, Game 10: February 11, 2007
Israeli-League action returned on Sunday with Bnei Hasharon bouncing back from its defeat at the hands of Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem in the Israeli Cup final to top Hapoel Galil Elyon 90-83. However the much-anticipated clash of the titans between perennial champion Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv and Jerusalem was postponed till next month to allow Hapoel time to travel to Latvia for its ULEB Cup eighthfinals, second-leg game against Ventspils. In other games, Givat Shmuel earned its third win of the season and second in a row, but needed overtime to get by Ironi Ramat Gan 103-96. Givat Shmuel's young guard, Yuval Naimi, scored the last 7 points in regulation to force the extra period on the way to a season-high 30 points. Afula/Gilboa, which was 2 points short of shocking Maccabi in its last home game, stepped up to beat visiting Ironi Nahariya 84-76. The locals led by double digits from the beginning and enjoyed a big night of from forwards Jermaine Hall with 22 points and center Tunji Awojobi with 20. Ido Kozikaro led Nahariya with 19 points. Rishon Lezion added a big road win against Ironi Ashkelon, 74-76, after leading by 14 at halftime. Marcus Hatten scored 23 for the losing side, while Brian Tolbert had 20 for Rishon.
The refreshing hit of the season, Bnei Hasharon climbed to 8-2 after another key win over Galil at home. Bnei Hasharon stormed the court from the very beginning against Galil to take a 29-17 lead after one quarter, but Galil came back to minus-four at half time, 45-41 and didn't let go till the very last minute. Coach Oded Katash pushed his players, and when Lee Nailon fouled out it seemed Galil would have the upper hand, but Cookie Belcher was there to secure the 90-83 win and keep Bnei Hasharon in second place. Nailon led Bnei Hasharon with 27 points, while Tre Simmons posted 31 for Galil.
