Spanish League, Game 21: February 17-18, 2007
Daniel Santiago - Unicaja Fresh from an exciting King's Cup final eight, the Spanish League is back, as Unicaja showed its power by downing Real Madrid 77-69 in Malaga on Saturday. Daniel Santiago led the winners with 14 points, while Charles Smith and Kerem Tunceri each had 15 points for Real Madrid, that still leads the standings at 18-3. Tau Ceramica got closer to the top spot at 17-4 by topping Pamesa Valencia 71-65 in Vitoria on Sunday. Luis Scola led the way for Tau with 22 points but Serkan Erdogan hit the go-ahead three-pointer down the stretch. Winterthur FCB confirmed its good moment and sent a message that echoed all the way in Athens, Greece by simply overwhelming Etosa Alicante 107-74 behind 22 points from Juan Carlos Navarro and 20 from Michalis Kakiouzis. DKV Joventut and Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas registered respective losses this weekend, 83-77 aginast ViveMenorca and 89-79 against Polaris World CB Murcia. In other games, Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket edged Bruesa GBC 66-65 on a buzzer-beating triple by Javier Salgado, CB Granada thrashed Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 87-66 while MMT Estudiantes beat Caja San Fernando 91-78.

Unicaja improved to 12-9 and bounced back from a disappointing King's Cup appearance by beating Real Madrid 77-69 in Malaga on Saturday. Santiago led the winners with 14 points, Marko Tusek added 11 while Carlos Cabezas and Marcus Faison each had 10 for Unicaja. Smith and Tunceri each had 15 points for Real Madrid while Louis Bullock added 12 for the guests, who dropped to 18-3 but keep leading the Spanish League standings. Unicaja opened the game with a 11-0 run but Smith and Bullock kept Madrid in the game. A three-pointer by Smith gave Madrid its first lead, 41-42, midway through the third quarter. Once again Smith followed a jumper with a fast break dunk to gave his team a 48-50 edge after 30 minutes. Tusek and Faison fueled a 13-2 run that put Unicaja ahead for good, 61-56. Madrid still got within 65-64 with 3 minutes to go, but Faison and Santiago helped the hosts to cruise to a well-deserved win. Tau Ceramica stays second with a 17-4 record by topping Pamesa Valencia 71-65 in Vitoria on Sunday. Scola led the way for Tau with 22 points, Igor Rakocevic had 14 points, Erdogan 11 and Tiago Splitter 10. Tau led for the best part of the final period but a three-pointer by Dejan Milojevic tied it at 65-65 with less than 2 minutes to go. Erdogan answered from downtown while Scola sealed the outcome from the free throw line.

Winterthur FCB had no problems to thrash Etosa Alicante 107-74 and improve to 12-9 in the standings. Juan Carlos Navarro had 22 points for Barcelona, Michalis Kakiouzis added 20, Fran Vazquez 16 while Jordi Trias posted a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds for Barcelona, that led 37-18 after 10 minutes and never looked back. DKV Joventut dropped to 13-8 but stayed fourth in the standings despite a 83-77 road loss against ViveMenorca. Chris Moss paced the winners with 16 points. Rudy Fernandez had 15 points for Joventut, Robert Archibald added 14, Andy Betts 13 and Charles Gaines 10. Joventut got within 68-67 midway through the final period, but a 13-0 run allowed Menorca to seal a much-needed win. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas dropped to 11-10 due to a 89-79 road loss against Polaris World CB Murcia. Terrell Myers had 28 points for Murcia. Jimmie Hunter led Gran Canaria with 16 points, Marcus Norris had 14 and Sitapha Savane 10. Gran Canaria trailed 65-49 after three quarters and even when it got within 82-75 with a minute to go, it happened to be too little, too late for the guests.
