Turkish League, Game 20: February 17-18, 2007
Marcus Haislip - Efes Pilsen Efes Pilsen conquered a share of the top of the Turkish League by taking the much-anticipated clash against Turk Telekom at the Abdi Ipekci Arena 79-72. The Istanbul side, which lost the previous game between the sides in Ankara 70-69, was led by Marcus Haislip's 29 points and 8 rebounds. Efes, Telekom and Fenerbahce Ulker now share the lead with 18-2 records, but that won't last for long as the big Istanbul derby, pitting Efes and Fenerbahce against one another, is on tap for next weekend. Fenerbahce's recent win came at the expense of Banvit of Bandirma, 94-76, thank to a big night from Ira Clark. Meanwhile Besiktas ColaTurka suffered its fourth straight loss, falling in overtime to Darussafaka 81-83. Henry Dobie scored 22 points for Darussafaka, including the game-winner with 2 seconds remaining. Gerald Fitch scored 25 and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Galatasaray Cafe Crown to an 86-91 road win at CASA TED Kolejliler. Richard Shield posted 30 points for CASA TED in defeat. In other games, Omer Asik posted 11 points and 18 boards as Alpella edged Tofas 64-62, Pinar Karsiyaka defeated Tekel 60-50, Oyak Renault topped Beykoz 78-81 and Mutlu Aku Selcuk University beat Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi 87-82.

In the highlighted game of week 20, Turk Telekom ruled the first quarter with Erwin Dudley and Derrick Alston scoring inside to give the visitors a 20-22 advantage. In the second quarter, Efes improved its defense and held Telekom to 2 points for 5 minutes, scored mostly by Haislip. Drew Nicholas's layup in the last minute of the half gave the hosts a double-figure lead before Telekom scored to send the teams to the lockers with the score 44-35. Telekom had a thunderous start to the second half, with Tutku Acik and Muratcan Guler sleading the comeback until Acik's three-pointer swung the lead back to Telekom at 47-48. Haislip and Kerem Gonlum sparked Efes, which ran to a 61-54 lead at the end of the third quarter. Jan Hendrik Jagla's back-to-back threes early in the last quarter put Telekom up 64-67, but the hard-working Haislip and Cuneyt Erden joined Nicholas to help Efes regain the lead. With a minute left, some Telekom misses were followed by a turnover by Jagla and Haislip answered with a dunk that made it 72-68 and Efes held on for a 7-point win. Haislip finished with 29 points and 8 rebounds, Nicholas had 19 and Erden scored 8 points for Efes. Dudley scored 22 and grabbed 9 rebounds for Telekom, Acik had 14 points plus 5 rebounds and 9 assists, Alston scored 12 and Jagla ended up with 10.

Fenerbahce struggled early before finding its rhythm on the way to an easy win over Banvit. Art Long and Marque Perry helped the visitors take a 19-21 lead after 10 minutes. Fenerbahce's defense combined with Clark and Willie Solomon's points paced the hosts to a 44-38 lead at the end of the first half. Fenerbahce continued to control the game also in the third quarter through consecutive points by Omer Onan, Clark and Eddie Basden, going into the last quarter ahead 60-51. Three pointers by Mirsad Turkcan, Damir Mrsic, Ibrahim Kutluay, Clark and Basden widened the gap even more in the last period as Fener went on to win 94-76. Clark shined with 26 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals, Solomon finished with by 18 points, 7 assists and 6 steals, Basden had 14 points, and Turkcan scored 10, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished 8 assists for Fenerbahce. Long posted 16 points plus 10 rebounds for Banvit, Perry had 20 points and 4 assists and Miroslav Radosevic wound up with 18 points for Banvit.

Besiktas ColaTurka's recent struggles continued at the hands of Darussafaka. Dobie was the hero with 22 points, including the game-winner with 2 seconds remaining for the visitors. Mike Jones added 19 points and 6 rebounds and Polat Kocaoglu scored 12 – including the three-pointer with 9 seconds left in regulation to force overtime when the score was 67-64 for Besiktas. Oktay Yilmaz was also big for Darussafaka, posting a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Aubrey Reese scored 19 points, had 6 assists and 5 steals for Besiktas and Jamel Thomas scored 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds and Donnell Harvey had 14 points plus 10 rebounds for Besiktas. The hosts protested the result, claiming that the referees counted the clock back to 21 seconds with 2.4 seconds remaining to repeat the Darussafaka attack became the team's coach had asked for a timeout and the referees didn't hear it.
