Greek League, Game 17: February 17-18, 2007
Olympiacos Piraeus topped rival Panathinaikos on the road for the first time in 7 years Saturday in the bitter Athens derby, highlighting the 17th round of action in the Greek League. The Reds edged closer to the defending champs in the standings with an 84-89 victory at the OAKA Olympic Hall. The trio of Adrija Zizic, Giannis Bourousis and Sofoklis Schortsanitis combined for 44 points to lead coach Pini Gershon's side. Meanwhile, Olympia Larissas picked up another surprising result by topping Aris 75-67 behind Matt Walsh's 17 points and 8 boards. Alexis Kiritsis and Ermin Jazvin scored 18 each to lead Maroussi past AEK by 86-69. Panellinios defeated PAOK 80-71 thanks to 17 points and 12 boards from Mamadu N’diaye and Panionios edged AE Larissa 96-93 in overtime. In other games, Apollon Patras beat Egaleo 87-79 behind 31 points from Ivo Josipovic and 18 from Jimmy Oliver, while Keydren Clark led Egaleo with 28 points. The other team from Patra, Olympiada, won as well, this time in Thessaloniki over Makedonikos by 73-86. Corey Albano had 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Lewis Sims added 16. Milos Pavlovic led Makedonikos with 18 points.
Despite two losses already this season to Panathinaikos – one early in the Greek Cup and another earlier in the regular season at the Peace and Friendship Stadium – Olympiacos was strong enough to dominate Panathinaikos and celebrate a clear 89-84 victory. The key trio was the big men: Zizic with 18 points plus 5 boards and 3 assists, Bourousis with 14 points on 3-of-4 three-point shooting plus 11 rebounds and 3 blocks, and Sofoklis Schortsanitis with 12 points plus 5 rebounds. Perimeter stars Alex Acker and Scoonie Penn added 16 and 13 points respectively. Gershon’s idea of sending Panagiotis Vasilopoulos to stop Dimitris Diamantidis was also a key, while Christos Harissis helped on offensive as well with 6 points. Olympiacos led 27-40 midway through the second period and 58-70 late in the third, as the Reds stopped Panathinaikos’s pick-and-roll and dominated under the boards, forcing the Greens to three-point shots that they missed. The hosts shot more three than two-point shots (31 to 26), showing a lack of balance on offense. Ramunas Siskauskas scored 28 points, making 15-of-16 free throws, while Diamantidis had 16 plus 5 assists, Kostas Tsartsaris 14 with 8 boards and Mike Batiste added 8 points.
Olympia beat Aris in Larissa, confirming its title as one of the Greek League biggest surprises this season. Walsh led his team with 17 points and 8 boards, while Giorgos Tsiaras added 16 and Savo Djikanovic 12. For Aris, Savas Iliadis had 16 points, Jeremiah Massey and Mike Wilkinson 14 apiece and Terrel Castle 10 points. The loss dropped Aris to third in the standings following Panathinaikos and Olympiacos. Maroussi crushed AEK 86-69 thanks to 18 points each from Kiritsis and Jazvin, while Giannis Gagaloudis led AEK with 12 points. In Elliniko Indoor Hall, Kennedy Winston made a three-pointer at the overtime buzzer to lead Panionios over AE Larissas 96-93. Winston scored 20but teammate Andre Hutson led the way with 29 points plus 8 boards. Arthur Lee and Nikos Papanikolopoulos led Larissa with 20 and 17 points, respectively. Panellinios downed PAOK 80-71 behind 17 points and 12 boards from Mamadu N’diaye and 17 points from Anthony Goldwire. Jason Parker led PAOK with 19.
