Polish League, Game 19: February 17-18, 2007
Defending champion Prokom Trefl Sopot stretched its lead atop the Polish League after edging Gipsar Stal Ostrow 82-81. The win, combined with second-place Turow Zgorzelec's surprising 55-65 home loss to Polpak Swiecie, saw 16-3 Prokom move on top of the table by two wins. Turow led by 12 in the third quarter and by 7 coming into last one, but Polpak then took over and outscored the hosts 9-26 in the final 10 minutes. Howard Frier scored 20 points to lead Polpak in his debut in Polish league. Dragisa Drobnjak had 18 for Turow. Asco Slask beat Kager Gdynia 89-86 as five players scored in double figures, including Radoslaw Hyzy’s 15 points. Gintaras Kadziulis scored 22 points, while Kordian Korytek added 20 and 11 rebounds for Kager. Meanwhile, league-leading scorer Patrick Okafor had 24 points and 9 rebounds for Polpharma in a tough 90-85 decision over Anwil Wloclawek. In other games, Kenny Walker finished with a double-double of 24 points and 15 rebounds to help Polonia beat Sokolow Znicz Jarosław 73-82 on the road. Andre Cruz had 16 points and 7 assists for hosts. Energa Czarni beat AZS Koszalin 77-63 in a local derby as Mantas Cesnauskis scored a season-high 19 for the winners, while Chris Hunter had 20 points and 11 rebounds for AZS. Bottom-of-the-table Unia Tarnow came to Kotwica with just seven players and was destroyed 92-67. Sebastian Machowski hit six triples on his way to 20 points, while centers Rafal Bigus and Chris Daniels combined for 22 points, 29 rebounds and 8 assists.
Prokom led for almost the entire game and built a double-digit advantage by the last period, but the visitors came back behind Tony Atkins, who hit four triples down the stretch. The last one was at the buzzer and was able just to cut the gap to 1 point. The winners were led by Adam Wojcik and Filip Dylewicz, who finished with 18 points each. Michael Andersen added 13 and Christian Dalmau 11 for Prokom. Atkins had 19 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for Gipsar. Okafor had 24 points and 9 rebounds for Polpharma in a tough 90-85 decision over Anwil Wloclawek.
