Portuguese League, Game 27: February 24-25, 2007
Ovarense Aerosoles stays unstoppable and improved to 22-2 by downing Benfica, its most direct opponent to win the Portuguese League this season, 78-72 in Ovar on Saturday. Cordell Henry paced the winners with 20 points, Gregory Stempin added 19 while Ben Reed had 11 for Ovarense. Ashante Johnson and Leroy Watkins each had 16 points for Benfica while Ian Stanback added 10. Reed scored to give Ovarense a 18-17 edge after 10 minutes while Stempin allowed the hosts to get a 38-28 margin late in the first half. A 0-14 run put Benrfica ahead, 43-48, but Ovarense recovered to get a 65-58 lead with 8 minutes to go. Benfica never rally, as an outstanding Stempin kept Ovarense ahead until the final buzzer. Queluz Sintra PM got a quality home win by beating Porto Ferpinta 76-65 on Saturday. Jamie Kendrick led the winners with 15 points while Joao Manuel added 14. Marques Houtman had 13 points for Porto, that led 51-52 late in the third quarter. A 17-3 run allowed Queluz to seal the win. In other games, Lusitanis Angra PM edged Casino Figueira Ginasio 71-77 behind 23 points from Willie Taylor while Belenenses Hyundai Lusifor edged CAB Madeira 83-77.
