Spanish League, Game 23: March 3-4, 2007
Zoran Planinic - Tau Ceramica Tau Ceramica took the big showdown in the Spanish League this weekend by thrashing Unicaja 85-56 in Vitoria on Saturday, in a rematch of last year's title series. Tiago Splitter and Zoran Planinic paced the winners each with 15 points, as Tau opened the game with a 27-10 run and never looked back. Tau improved to 18-5 in the standings and is only one win away from Real Madrid, first at 19-4. Madrid registered a 77-74 road loss against  Grupo Capitol Valladolid on Sunday morning. Josep Gomis paced the winners with 16 points. Louis Bullock had 20 points for Real Madrid, but he missed three times from downtown in the game's final possession. DKV Joventut and Winterthur FC Barcelona keep tying for the fourth place, each with a 14-9 record. Joventut beat Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 75-81 on the road on Saturday behind 20 points from Rudy Fernandez. Meanwhile, Jaka Lakovic had 28 points to lead Barcelona to a 86-72 home win against Polaris World CB Murcia. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas improved to 12-11 by beating CB Granada 79-70 at home on Saturday with 16 points from Jimmie Hunter. In other games, Akasvayu Girona downed ViveMenorca 56-71, Pamesa Valencia bested Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 75-68, Caja San Fernando topped Bruesa GBC 86-79 while MMT Estudiantes defeated Etosa Alicante 90-81.

Splitter and Planinic paced the winners each with 15 points. Kaya Peker and Ender Arslan added 10 apiece for Tau. Marcus Faison had 14 points for Unicaja, Carlos Cabezas added 12 and Jiri Welsch 10. Tau used a 16-0 run that Planinic capped with a basket to get a 27-10 lead after 13 minutes. Unicaja tried to rally and a put-back dunk by Faison gt the guests within 43-32 at halftime. Tau did not panic, however, and found a go-to guy in a recovered Planinic, who simply dominated the game in the second half. The hosts opened the third quarter with a 13-1 run and kept extending its margin little by little until the final buzzer. DKV Joventut improved to 14-9 by edging Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 75-81 on the road on Saturday. Fernandez paced the winners with 20 points, Charles Gaines added 19 and 9 rebounds while Elmer Bennett had 11 for Joventut, that led all the way in the second half. Bilbao Basket managed to get within 61-64 with 6 minutes to go, but Rudy followed free throws with a fast break basket to keep his team ahead. Back-to-back triples by Fernandez and Ricky Rubio broke the game for good.

Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas improved to 12-11 in the league board by beating CB Granada 79-70 at home on Saturday. Hunter led the way for Gran Canaria with 16 points. Sitapha Savane added 12, Jackson Vroman had 11 while Marcus Norris and Kornel David each chipped in 10 for the winners. Vroman, David and Hunter allowed Gran Canaria to get a 34-14 margin early in the second quarter. Granada did not surrender and got within 57-48 after 30 minutes, but Hunter and Norris stepped up to make Gran Canaria add an important home win. Real Madrid dropped to 19-4 due to a 77-74 road loss against Grupo Capitol Valladolid on Sunday morning. Gomis paced the winners with 16 points. Bullock had 20 points for Real Madrid, Charles Smith added 16, Axel Hervelle 14 and Felipe Reyes 11. Reyes added 12 boards for a double-double. It all came down to the end of a balanced games, as Gomis hit 1 of 2 free throws for a 77-74 Valladolid margin. Bullock missed three times from downtown in the game's final possession. Winterthur FCB improved to 14-9 by beating Polaris World CB Murcia 86-72 at home on Sunday morning. Lakovic had 28 points for Barcelona, Juan Carlos Navarro added 12 and Roko-Leni Ukic 10. Marcus Fizer had 31 points for Murcia, that led for the best part of the first half until free throws by Fran Vazquez tied it at 41-41 at the break. Lakovic shined in a 13-2 run that put Barcelona ahead for good, 54-45. He got some help from Navarro, as Barcelona boosted its margin to 76-57 and cruised to another home win.
