Jimmie Hunter - Gran Canaria It was a weekend full of surprises in the Spanish League, as even when Real Madrid stayed atop the standings with a 19-5 record, its impressing 18-game home winning streak came to an end. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas edged Madrid 82-85 in Palacio Vistalegre on Saturday to improve to 13-11 in the standings. Jimmie Hunter led the winners with 17 points while Louis Bullock led Madrid with 18 points. A 0-10 run in the final 2 minutes sealed the outcome. DKV Joventut showed it is one of the toughest teams to beat in its won Palau Olimpic in Badalona by topping mighty Tau Ceramica 79-67 in Badalona on Sunday. Rudy Fernandez led the way for Joventut with 20 points while Fred House had 16 points for Tau. It all came down to the final 3 minutes, in which a 12-1 run allowed Joventut to cruise to a big home win. interthur FCB had to battle hard to beat Caja San Fernando 85-95 in Sevilla on Sunday and improve to 14-9 in the standings. Jaka Lakovic led 5 Barcelona players in double digits with 19 points. Meanwhile, Unicaja showed it is ready for its big Euroleague showdown against Dynamo Moscow by thrashing CB Granada 96-73 in Malaga on Sunday behind 21 points from Berni Rodriguez. In other games, Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket beat Grupo Capitol Valladolid 71-64, Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada thrashed Polaris World CB Murcia 98-80, ViveMenorca bested Pamesa Valencia 100-89, MMT Estudiantes upset Akasvayu Girona 79-84 while Bruesa GBC downed Etosa Alicante 81-64.

Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas provided the most surprising result in this round by edging Real Madrid 82-85 on the road on Saturday. As such, Gran Canaria handed Madrid its first home loss this season after 18 straight wins in both the Spanish League and the ULEB Cup. Gran Canaria improved to 13-11 while Madrid dropped to 19-5 but stayed first. Hunter led the winners with 17 points. Jim Moran added 15, Kornel David had 13, Jackson Vroman 12 and Sitapha Savane 10. Bullock led Madrid with 18 points, Felipe Reyes added 14 while Charles Smith and Blagota Sekulic each had 10 for the hosts. A three-pointer by David gave Gran Canaria a 47-52 lead midway through the third quarter. A 9-0 run that Smith capped with a put-back basket allowed Madrid to get a 64-59 edge after 30 minutes. Madrid seemed to have sealed the outcome, as it led 80-75 with 2 minutes to go. Marcus Norris hit a critical triple, igniting a 0-10 run in which Vroman had 5 points, good to seal the win down the stretch. Unicaja is now fifth at 14-10 by thrashing CB Granada 96-73 in Malaga on Sunday. Rodriguez paced the winners with 21 points on 7-of-7 two-pointers. Kostas Vasileadis added 16, Marko Tusek had 13 and Marcus Faison 10 for Unicaja, that broke the game in an outstanding third quarter, outscoring their opponents by 29-11 to get a 74-47 margin, more than enough to seal the outcome.

DKV Joventut showed it is ready to keep fighting to stay alive in the Euroleague Top 16 by beating Tau Ceramica 79-67 in Badalona on Sunday. Joventut improved to 15-9 and is fifth in the standings while Tau Ceramica dropped to 18-6 but stayed second. Fernandez led the way for Joventut with 20 points. Elmer Bennett added 17, Robert Archibald had 15, Charles Gaines grabbed 13 rebounds while Andy Betts added 10 boards for the winners. House had 16 points for Tau, Luis Scola 15 and Ender Arslan 13. An outstanding House fueled a 4-21 opening run for Tau, but Joventut got within 13-23 after 10 minutes and kept rallying until a three-pointer by Bennett put the hosts ahead, 37-36, at halftime. House got help from Scola and Arslan to get an eight-point lead, 50-58, late in the third quarter. A fast break basket by Scola gave Tau its last lead, 65-66. Fernandez, Gaines and Bennett each had 4 points in a 12-1 run that sealed the outcome. Winterthur FCB had to battle hard to beat Caja San Fernando 85-95 in Sevilla on Sunday and improve to 14-9 in the standings. Lakovic led the winners with 19 points, Michalis Kakiouzis had 17, Juan Carlos Navarro added 16, Fran Vazquez 12 and Jordi Trias 10. Barcelona hit 8 of 10 triples in the first half to get a 40-52 lead at the break. Filip Videnov led the Caja San Fernando comeback and the hosts got within 74-77 with 7 minutes to go. Kakiouzis stepped up when it mattered, allowed Barcelona to stay ahead until the final buzzer.
