Russian League, Game 22: March 5-11, 2007
CSKA Moscow had to battle harder than expected to beat Spartak St. Petersburg 66-73 on the road on Saturday and stay atop the Russian League standings with a 17-2 record. Matjaz Smodis and David Andersen each had 15 points for CSKA, that led 35-36 at halftime. CSKA improved its defense in the second half, allowing 2 points in 6 minutes. Meanwhile, Smodis had 5 points in a 2-21 run in which 7 CSKA players scored to break the game open, 45-65, after three quarters. Spartak rallied in the final period and got within 63-68 with a minutes to go, but a three-pointer by J.R. Holden and free throws by Trajan Langdon sealed the win. Meanwhile, Dynamo Moscow ties for the third place with a 15-4 record by topping CSK VVS-Samara 76-86 on the road on Sunday. Yuri Vasilyev and Dmitry Domani led the winners each with 13 points. Eddie Gill and Antonis Fotsis added 12 apiece while Bojan Popovic had 10 for Dynamo, that trailed 46-43 at halftime. Fotsis, Popovic and Vasilyev allowed Dynamo to get a 61-70 lead after 30 minutes. A three-point play by Domani made it a 16-point game, 61-77, and Samara never recovered. In other games, Sibirtelekom edged Standart 94-88 on Sunday, Spartak Vgues also downed Standart 97-71 on Thursday while Spartak St. Petersburg beat Samara 69-83 on Monday behind 25 points and 13 rebounds from Boniface Ndong.
