Turkish League, Game 23: March 9-12, 2007
Efes Pilsen made a thunderous return to the Turkish League after suffering in the Euroleague against Panathinaikos by trashing lowly Oyak Renault 78- 38, but coach Oktay Mahmuti's squad remained one win back in the race for first place as both Fenerbahce Ulker and Turk Telekom won. Fenerbahce defeated CASA TED Kolejliler 81-59 as Omer Onan led five Fener scorers in double figures with 12. In Monday's lone game, Turk Telekom held on for an 88-83 win over Besiktas Cola Turka as Tutku Acik posted 20 points. Fourth-place Galatasaray Cafe Crown slipped further away from the leading pack after losing to Pinar Karsiyaka in overtime 80-72. Marcus Slaughter had 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting and 9 rebounds to lead Karsiyaka. Galatasaray, which was without Gerald Fitch, got 19 points and 14 rebounds from Jeffrey Graves. In other games, Omer Asik erupted for 10 points and 23 boards to lead Alpella to a rare 82-64 win over Mutlu Aku Selcuk University, Henry Dobie posted 19 points and 5 assists as Darussafaka downed Tofas on the road 68-75, Tekel topped Banvit 72-75 as Ersin Gorken had 18 and Mersin Buyuksehir Belediyesi beat Beykoz 81-78 behind Jared Homan's 17.
Efes Pilsen trashed Oyak Renault 78-38 to improve to 20-3. The Istanbul side set a league record by holding the Bursa team to just 3 points in the last quarter and conceded just 10 points in the entire second half. Despite struggling with its offense in the early going, Efes led 15-12 after 10 minutes thanks to Drew Nicholas and Marcus Haislip. In the second quarter, Efes got going with Antonio Granger's outside shots and Ermal Kuqo scoring inside for a 38-28 halftime lead. Efes's defensive wall held Oyak Renault to 7 points in the third quarter as it extended its lead to 61-35 after three quarters. The hosts continued to pile it on in the last few minutes with a record-setting defensive display on the way to a 40-point win. Granger lead Efes by 21 points, Kuqo finished with 17 points plus 5 rebounds and Haislip added 11 points. Atlan Erol scored 13 points for Oyak Renault in defeat.
Fenerbahce Ulker had an easier time than expected against CASA TED Kolejliler of Ankara with an 81-59 result. Fenerbahce took a 16-7 lead in the first quarter through the points of Onan and Oguz Sava and increased the lead to 41-17 at halftime after an excellent second quarter from Damir Mrsic, Willie Solomon and Ira Clark. Kolejliler woke up in the third period, during which it outscored the hosts 14-20 thanks to the determined play of Erek Hansen and Richard Shields. However Fenerbahce didn’t let up in the final period and hung on for the win to remain atop the table. Onan finished with 12 points, while Solomon, Savas, Clark and Mrsic had 11 each. Hansen wound up with 12 points and 11 rebounds for Kolejliler.
Turk Telekom used a third-quarter run to beat Besiktas Cola Turka 88-83 in Ankara and extended its home-court winning streak to 11. Besiktas got off to a good start as Erkan Veyseloglu and Aubrey Reese pushed the visitors to a 23-27 lead at the end of the first quarter. Turk Telekom started digging in with Erwin Dudley and Jan Hendrik Jagla, but Besiktas stood strong with Donnell Harvey inside and Erdal Bibo's last-second jumper allowed Besiktas to lead 42-44 at halftime. Telekom made a thunderous start to the second half, using a 21-2 run with Tutku Acik and Dudley shining to take a 52-66 lead into the fourth quarter. Muratcan Guler joined Acik in hitting from downtown to help Telekom extend its lead to 77-59 midway through the fourth quarter. Reese Baris Ozcan and Bibo tried everything in the remaining minutes, but it was only enough to cut the big difference to 5 points as the hosts remained tied with Fenerbahce for first place. Acik led Turk Telekom with 20 points, Dudley added 19, Guler 16 and Jagla 13. Reese scored a game-high 26 for Besiktas, Bibo made 14 and Harvey 12.
