Spanish League, Game 25: March 17-18, 2007
A classic game highlighted the Spanish League weekend, as Winterthur FC Barcelona took the big showdown by beating archrivals Real Madrid 73-68 at home on Saturday. Barcelona improved to 16-9 and is fourth while Madrid dropped to 19-6 but kept the top spot in the standings. Rodrigo De La Fuente led the winners with 15 points. Tau Ceramica now ties atop the league board also at 16-9 by thrashing ViveMenorca 96-59 in Vitoria on Sunday. Tiago Splitter paced Tau with 22 points. Igor Rakocevic added 19 while Luis Scola posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas improved to 14-11 by thrashing Caja San Fernando 89-67 at home on Sunday behind 17 points from Sitapha Savane. Unicaja dropped to 14-11 due to a 74-66 road loss against Pamesa Valencia while DKV Joventut also registered a 86-76 road loss against Etosa Alicante despite 24 points and 11 rebounds from Charles Gaines. In other games, MMT Estudiantes topped Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 94-86, C.B. Granada downed Bruesa GBC 80-68, Grupo Capitol Valladolid beat Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 71-63 while Akasvayu Girona edged Polaris World CB Murcia 80-81 with game-winning free throws from Marko Marinovic.
Winterthur FC Barcelona took the 100th league edition of the Spanish superclassic by downing archrivals Real Madrid 73-68 at home on Saturday. Barcelona improved to 16-9 and is fourth while Madrid dropped to 19-6 but kept the top spot in the standings. De La Fuente led the winners with 15 points. Michalis Kakiouzis added 14 while Denis Marconato had 10 for Barcelona. Felipe Reyes had 16 points for Real Madrid while Charles Smith and Axel Hervelle each added 13. Gianluca Basile and Roko-Lenu Ukic allowed Barcelona to get a 19-15 lead after 10 minutes. Madrid struggled to score, while Kakiouzis helped the hosts to extend their margin to 34-25 at halftime. Barcelona kept a slim lead throughout the second half, but a put-back basket by Hervelle got Madrid within 67-64 with 1:45 to go. De La Fuente and Jaka Lakovic hit consecutive triples to seal the outcome. Tau Ceramica tied for first place at 19-6 by thrashing ViveMenorca 96-59 in Vitoria on Sunday. Splitter paced Tau with 22 points. Rakocevic added 19, Scola posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, Serkan Erdogan had 15 points and Zoran Planinic 10 in an easy home win for Tau, that led 45-36 at halftime and simply rolled in the final period to seal the outcome.
Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas improved to 14-11 by thrashing Caja San Fernando 89-67 at home on Sunday. Savane led Gran Canaria with 17 points off the bench. Jim Moran added 15, Kornel David had 13, Jackson Vroman 12 and Sergio Perez 11. Moran had 11 points in a 15-4 opening run. Gran Canaria boosted its margin to 48-30 at halftime and then again to 71-47 after 30 minutes, enough to seal a big win. Unicaja dropped to 14-11 due to a 74-66 road loss against Pamesa Valencia. Dejan Milojevic led Pamesa with 14 points. Berni Rodriguez had 18 points for Unicaja, Daniel Santiago 17 and Marcus Faison 13. A basket by Santiago got Unicaja within 60-58 with 4 minutes to go. Milojevic and Mindaugas Timinskas allowed Pamesa to seal the win down the stretch. DKV Joventut is now fifth at 15-10 due to a 86-76 road loss against Etosa Alicante. Larry Lewis led the winners with 22 points. Gaines led Joventut with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Elmer Bennett had 15 points, Robert Archibald 13 and Rudy Fernandez 12. Joventut trailed 68-48 after 30 minutes and even when it got within 75-68 with 2 minutes to go, it happened to be too little, too late for the guests.
