Russian League, Game 23: March 16-18, 2007
Another weekend, another Russian League win for CSKA, that keeps dominating the standings with a 18-2 record by downing CSK VVS-Samara 90-73 at home on Saturday. Theo Papaloukas led the way for CSKA with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. Trajan Langdon and Thomas Van den Spiegel each added 12 points, Matjaz Smodis had 11 while Aleksey Savrasenko and Nikita Kourbanov each scored 10 points for CSKA, that trailed 34-35 at halftime. CSKA used a 10-0 run that J.R. Holden capped with a triple to get a 64-56 lead after 30 minutes and never looked back. Unics improved to 15-3 by beating Ural Great 87-74 in Kazan on Friday. Ksystof Lavrinovic and Yahor Meshcharakou led the winners each with 18 points while Dusko Savanovic had 14 for Unics, that led 32-16 after 10 minutes and boosted its margin to 75-47 after 30 minutes to rest its best players for the decisive ULEB Cup semifinals game in Madrid. Khimki improved to 16-4 and stays third by overwhelming University Surgut 121-68 at home also on Friday. Ruben Wolkowyski led 8 Khimki players in double digits with 18 points. Ademola Okulaja added 15, Kelly MCCarty, Maciej Lampe, Vladimir Dyatchok and Vitaliy Fridzon each had 12 while Melvin Booker and Vladimir Veremeenko scored 11 points apiece in an easy win for Khimki. Dynamo Moscow ties for the third place at 16-4 by edging Dynamo Moscow Region 64-58 at home on Sunday. Dimitry Domani led the winners with 20 points. Antonis Fotsis added 17, Lazaros Papadopoulos had 12 and Bojan Popovic 11 for Dynamo, that trailed 27-32 at halftime. Domani and Fotsis led the Dynamo comeback, as it got a 49-42 lead after 30 minutes and held off a late rally to add another win. In other games on Sunday, Spartak St. Petersburg beat SibirTelekom 111-83 while Lokomotiv Rostov downed Standart 94-75.
