Baltic League, Phase 2, Game 12-13: March 13-17, 2007
Eddie Shannon - Ventspils Ventspils edged Lietuvos Rytas 77-75 on Saturday in the feature Baltic League Division I match, while Zalgiris raised its record to 8-1 by beating Barons and Siauliai in back-to-back games. L. Rytas dropped to 6-2 and Ventspils climbed to the third place at 5-4. The perennial Latvian champions from Ventspils recorded a spectacular win over L.Rytas on at the end of a very balanced game. The hosts were prefect from the line down the stretch with Eddie Shannon, Justin Love and Uvis Helmanis, while Matt Nielsen and Arturas Jomantas missed shots that could have sent the game into an extra session. Meanwhile Marko Popovic was back in form and Tanoka Beard solid as always for Zalgiris, whci continued its run atop the League with two road wins.

The perennial Latvian champions from Ventspils recorded a spectacular win over L.Rytas on at the end of a very balanced game. Dusan Jelic helped the hosts to a 21-16 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Four minutes into the second period, L. Rytas tied the score at 25-25 and Matt Nielsen put the visitors ahead 37-38 at halftime. Mid-range jumpers by Ivan Koljevic gave L. Rytas a 43-48 margin early in the third quarter, which his team maintained at 53-55 after 30 minutes. Nielsen and Janis Blums pushed L. Rytas to 61-68 midway through the final quarter, but Shannon sounded the charge for Ventspils, which closed to 70-72. The hosts were prefect from the line down the stretch with Shannon, Love and Helmanis, while Nielsen and Jomantas missed shots that could have sent the game into an extra session. Shannon led four players in double figures with 15 points, Love added 13 and Helmanis and Raimonds Vaikulis chipped in 10 apiece. Nielsen led the Lithuanian champs with 22 points and 11 boards, Jomantas tallied 19 with 9 rebounds and Koljevic drilled 14.

Zalgiris scored a 69-85 win over Barons on Thursday, led by 26 points from by Popovic. The hosts led 23-19 at the end of the first quarter, but a 10-24 Zalgiris run gave the visiting side a 33-43 lead at halftime and they never looked back. Beard added 12 points and Loren Woods posted 10. On Saturday, Zalgiris downed 60-72 Siauliai led by 12 points apiece posted by Beard and Jonas Maciulis. The hosts took a slim 19-16 margin after the first quarter, bu Zalgiris went ahead 32-34 at halftime and got a safety 46-63 cushion entering the last quarter when they never looked back. Popovic added 11 points and Paulius Jankunas and Marcelinho Machado bagged 8 apiece.
