Polish League, Game 22: March 17-18, 2007
Prokom Trefl Sopot lost 82-77 at Sokolow Znicz Jaroslaw in the biggest upset over the weekend in the Polish league. With four games left in the regular season, the defending champions from Sopot are only one victory ahead of second place Turow Zgorzelec in the standings. Turow improved to 17-5 with a comfortable 88-66 victory over Kotwica Kolobrzeg. The top two teams will meet next Sunday in a clutch clash in Sopot. Turow took control from the beginning behind Thomas Kelati, who finished with 23 points. ASCO Slask is almost sure of third place following an 82-72 home decision over Gipsar Stal Ostrow. The hosts led by as many as 21 in the second quarter, but Gipsar close the gap to six in fourth period. Then Dominik Tomczyk scored 6 of his game-high 17 points, Dean Oliver added a triple and Slask escaped for good. Tony Akins had 15 for Stal. Kager Gdynia lost its sixth game in a row, this time at home to Polpak Swiecie 63-64. Gintaras Kadziulis scored 23 points for Kager. Anwil Wloclawek beat Polonia Warsaw 93-81 behind 19 points from Otis Hill and 17 from Andrzej Pluta. Kenny Walker had a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds for Polonia. Polpharma unexpectedly lost at home to AZS Koszalin 83-89 despite 23 points from Ivo Kitzinger. Marvin Haynes had 24 for Koszalin, while Chris Hunter added 16 points, 17 rebounds and 7 steals. Energa Czarni destroyed bottom-of-the-table Unia Tarnow 124-42 as six players scored in double figures.
Prokom was trailing by as many as 22 points at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but was able to come back and tie the score at 64-64. With a scoreboard showing 74-74 Prokom had a chance to take the lead, but Tomas Masiulis committed an offensive foul. The hosts closed the game with an 8-3 run, thanks mainly to free throws. Ricky Clemons led Jaroslaw with 29 points, including six triples. He added 7 assists and 3 steals. Prokom had injury problems as three perimeter players – Jeff Nordgaard, Thomas Pacesas and Donatas Slanina – couldn’t play. Christian Dalmau, Rashid Atkisn and Jasmin Hukic played without back-ups and finished with 16, 14 and 14 points respectively. Adam Wojcik added 12 and Tomas Masiulis 10 in defeat.
