Austrian League Finals, Game 5: May 25, 2008
BSC Raiffeisen Furstenfeld edged Oberwart Gunners 88-89 on an Anthony Shavies free throw with 2 seconds remaining to win the Austrian League championship Sunday for the first time in club history. The Panthers won the best-of-five series 3-2, taking the final two games by a total of 3 points, to become the 16th team to win the Austrian League. Shavies, who finished with 24 points, was named finals MVP. It was Oberwart that went in front early, taking a promising 22-12 lead as Furstenfeld faced trouble when both Shelton Colwell and Milan Goljovic picked up 2 fouls in the first 5 minutes. But the visitors held on and then took the lead with a 0-10 second period run en route to a 45-51 halftime lead. The advantage would reach 11 as the Panthers started to roll. Hannes Ochsenhofer sparked a 10-2 charge midway through the fourth quarter as the Gunners stormed back and eventually tied the score at 78-78. The hosts went on to seize an 84-80 advantage, but then Furstenfeld came right back and with 64 seconds to go Slobodan Ocokoljic made it 86-86. Jay Youngblood and Shavies traded scores and the game went to the wire. In the end, Shavies drew a foul in the closing seconds, went to the line and made the first clutch free throw, enough to bring his team the title. Samo Grum and Ocokoljic added 14 points apiece for the winners. Jason Johnson paced the Gunners with 21 in defeat.
