Spanish League, Game 8: November 17-18, 2007
Rudy Fernandez - DKV Joventut DKV Joventut, Real Madrid and AXA FC Barcelona keep tying atop the Spanish League standings, each with a 7-1 record. Joventut downed MMT Estudiantes 70-85 in the Spanish capital on Saturday behind 15 points from Rudy Fernandez and Jan Jagla. Above all, it was a sad night for Spanish president, as longtime Estudiantes president Alejandro Gonzalez Varona passed away just hours before the game, in which he was going to be honoured for his many years leading the club. Real Madrid edged iurbentia Bilbao Basket 74-69 at home on Sunday with 17 points from Felipe Reyes while Barcelona topped CB Granada 68-71, as Jaka Lakovic and Gianluca Basile hit critical free throws in the final seconds. Tau is right behind at 6-2 by thrashing Unicaja 84-61 in Vitoria on Saturday behind 23 points for Igor Rakocevic. Marc Gasol had 22 points to lead Akasvayu Girona to a 81-93 road win against Ricoh Manresa, while Pamesa Valencia and Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas registered respective road losses, 69-64 against Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada and 89-88 against Grupo Capitol Valladolid. In other games, ViveMenorca downed Cajasol 102-80 while Grupo Begar Leon topped Polaris World CB Murcia 75-67.

DKV Joventut stayed atop the standings at 7-1 by downing MMT Estudiantes 70-85 in the Spanish capital on Saturday. Fernandez and Jan Jagla paced the winners each with 15 points. Ricky Rubio added 13 while Edu Hernandez-Sonseca had 11 for Joventut, that led 11-31 midway through the second quarter. Estudiantes cut its deficit to 39-40 right after the break, but Demond Mallet and Fernandez boosted the guests' margin to 53-65 after 30 minutes. Estudiantes did not get back in the game, allowing Joventut to escape with a win. Real Madrid also improvd to 7-1 by edging iurbentia Bilbao Basket 74-69 in Madrid on Sunday. Felipe Reyes led Madrid with 17 points, Louis Bullock added 14 and Alex Mumbru 10. Madrid led all the way in the final period, but free throws by Marcelinho Huertas got Bilbao Basket within 65-64 with 96 seconds to go. A 6-0 run that Reyes capped with free throws sealed the outcome down the stretch. AXA FC Barcelona joined the three-way atop the standings by edging CB Granada 68-71 on the road also on Sunday. Jaka Lakovic led Barcelona with 16 points while Gianluca Basile added 10 for the winners, who led 29-41 at halftime. Granada got back in the game and came within 66-67, but Basile and Lakovic combined 4 of 4 free throws in the final 13 seconds to win it for Barcelona.

Tau Ceramica left no doubt about its power by thrashing Unicaja 84-61 in Vitoria on Saturday. Rakocevic led the winners with 23 points. Tau improved to 6-2 while Unicaja dropped to 2-6. Pete Mickeal added 13, Zoran Planinic had 11 while Mirza Teletovic grabbed 10 rebounds for Tau. Boniface Ndong led Unicaja with 24 points and 11 rebounds but nobody else registered double digits. Tau led 35-29 at halftime but Rakocevic had 13 points in the third quarter while Teletovic, Planinic and Pablo Prigioni stroke from downtown in that period to boost the hosts' lead to 66-40 and seal the outcome. Akasvayu Girona improved to 5-3 by downing Ricoh Manresa 81-93 on the road on Sunday. Gasol paced the winners with 22 points, Fernando San Emeterio added 13, Jarod Stevenson and Branko Cvetkovic each had 12 while Jackson Vroman got 11 for Akasvayu, that trailed 66-65 late in the third quarter. Stevenson and San Emeterio helped Akasvayu to regain the lead, 74-84, with 3 minutes to go, enough to seal the outcome. Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas dropped to 3-5 due to a 89-88 road loss against Grupo Capitol Valladolid. Kornel David had 19 points for Gran Canaria while Cark English added 15. It all came down to the final second, in which Darius Pakamanis buried a corner triple to win it for Valladolid. Pamesa Valencia went down to 5-3 because of a 69-64 road loss against Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada. Ruben Douglas had 17 points for Pamesa while Dejan Milojevic and Stanko Barac each added 12. Free throws by Vuk Radivojevic sealed the outcome down the stretch.
