Spanish King's Cup Final: February 10, 2008
DKV Joventut is the Spanish King's Cup champion! Joventut rounded a perfect weekend by edging Tau Ceramica 80-82 in the title game on Sunday. Rudy Fernandez led the winners and earned MVP honors with 32 points on 7-for-9 two-point and 9-for-9 free-throw shooting. Demond Mallet added 15 for Joventut, that won its eighth Spanish Cup title, its first since it last lifted the trophy in 1997. Mirza Teletovic had 17 points on 5-for-6 triples to lead Tau. Igor Rakocevic added 16, Tiago Splitter had 12, Pete Mickeal 11 and Will McDonald 10. Jan Jagla fired in back-to-back triples early in the game, but Jovetut would miss its next 12 attempts from downtown. Meanwhile, Mickeal and a power layup by Gabe Mouneke allowed Tau to get a 14-13 edge after 10 minutes. Joventut struggled to score in the second quarter, while an unstoppable McDonald and a three-pointer by Pablo Prigioni gave Tau its biggest margin, 28-16. Fernandez and Ricky Rubio stepped up for Joventut to get the team going in offense while a driving layup by Mallet brought his team within 33-30 at halftime. Tau found a go-to guy in Splitter after the break but Rudy singlehandedly kept Joventut in the game. Splitter foundsome help from Mickeal and Teletovic but a fast break basket by Rubio kept Joventut within 58-55 after 30 minutes. Free throws by Rudy completed his team's comeback, 62-64, with 6 minutes to go. Teletovic hit consecutive three-pointer, one from each corner, and soon added a layup for a 72-71 Tau edge. Rudy followed a driving layup with a fast break dunk while free throws by Rubio gave Joventut a 77-80 edge with 27.9 seconds remaining. Teletovic missed from beyond the arc while Mallet sealed the outcome with more foul shots, allowing all Joventut fans to celebrate a historical win.
