French League Final: June 20, 2009
A rare single-game final for a national championship has returned Asvel Basket to its historic spot atop the French League after six years of absence. Asvel used a defensive show of force to stop Orleans 55-41 at the neutral venue of Palais Omnisports Paris-Bercy in Paris. The victory gave Asvel its 17th national title, more than any other club in France, but its first since 2002. An incredible 19-0 run in the second quarter turned the game around and set Asvel's defensive tone for the rest of its triumphant performance. Amara Sy, the only double-digit scorer for the winners, with 10 points, was named MVP. Sy also pulled 8 rebounds and dished 3 assists. Three teammates followed him with 8 points each: Ali Traore, who also had 8 rebounds, Eric Campbell and Nebojsa Bogavac. For Orleans, making its first-ever title-game appearance, Cedrick Banks had 13 points and Aldo Curti 8. Asvel became the sixth different champion since the French League went to a one-game final format six years ago, meaning no club has been able to win the title twice in that span.

Always unpredictable and exciting, the French League returns with Sluc Nancy as the new team to beat. Nancy had lost three consecutive French League finals but finally managed to lift its first-ever league trophy last season. Nancy kept the Greer brother, Jeff and Ricardo, as well as Cyril Julian or Victor Samnick while adding John Cox, Steed Tchicamboud. Michel Morandais or Rob Benson, so it is safe to say that Nancy could be ready for a fifth consecutive trip to the title game in Bercy. Le Mans invested well in the off-season market, landing Dee Spencer, David Bluthenthal, Brian Chase, Joao Paulo Batista or Pape Badiane. With Alain Koffi and teen sensation Antoine Diot back in the team, Le Mans could go all the way to the title. Asvel Basket landed Eric Campbell and Ali Traore, brought back Amara Sy and kept Chevy Troutman or Laurent Foirest to stay competitive at the top level. Chorale Roanne renovated its roster with the arrival of Chris Monroe, Taj Gray and Marcellus Sommerville. Le Havre picked up Bingo Merriex, Kentrell Gransberry and Brian Laing while keeping floor general T.J. Thompson. The playoff battle will be hard, as Pau-Orthez will try to bring back its glory days with Jameson Curry, Omar Thomas or Hiram Fuller, Strasbourg signed Brion Rush, John Allen or David Simon while Cholet kept Nando de Colo, Rodrigue Beaubois and Claude Marquis. Chalon inked Stephane Risacher while Gravelines picked up Yannick Bokolo and Cyril Akpomedah in a 2008-09 French League that sounds as interesting as it has ever been.
