French League, Regular Season, Game 30: May 13, 2009
The French League regular season came to an end on Wednesday and Asvel Basket finished first with a 22-8 record by downing Sluc Nancy 76-65 at home. J.R. Reynolds led the winners with 15 points. Chevon Troutman and Amara Sy each added 12 for Asvel. Akin Akingbala had 14 points for Nancy, that was fourth at 20-10. A 9-0 run that Troutman capped with a layup broke the game midway through the fourth quarter. Orleans was second at 21-9 by thrashing Strasbourg 78-56 behind 14 points from Cedrick Banks. Le Mans overwhelmed Rouen 105-65 at home behind 21 points from David Bluthenthal to finish third at 20-10. Meanwhile, Chorale Roanne finished fifth with a 19-11 record due to a 103-91 road loss against Cholet Basket. Meanwhile, STB Le Havre finished 14th at 10-20 and avoid relegation by beating Hyeres-Toulon 79-85 on the road. TJ Thompson paced the winners with 27 points. In other games, Besancon downed Pau-Orthez 91-83, Gravelines topped Dijon 76-86 while Vichy edged Chalon 69-62. The best-of-three quarterfinal matchups are: Asvel vs. Strasbourg, Orleans vs. Chalon, Le Mans vs. Gravelines and Nancy vs. Roanne.
Asvel Basket finished first at 22-8 by downing Sluc Nancy 76-65 at home. Reynolds led the winners with 15 points. Troutman and Sy each added 12 while Eric Campbell had 10 for Asvel. Akingbala had 14 points for Nancy, Ricardo Greer added 13 and Michel Morandais 12. Reynolds and Campbell shined early to make Asvel get a 12-5 midway through the first quarter. A three-pointer by Ben Dewar made it a double-digit game, 17-7. Ricardo Greer and Morandais ignited the guests' comeback while free throws by Serge Tchicamboud gave Nancy a 25-28 edge, after a 3-16 run. Free throws by Sy and Nebojsa Bogavac put Asvel back ahead, 30-28, at halftime. Back-to-back baskets by Aymeric Jeanneau and Troutman tied the game again, 52-52, after 30 minutes. A 9-0 run that Troutman capped with a layup broke the game open, 65-54, midway through the fourth quarter. Nancy did not recover, as Asvel cruised to a well-deserved win. Chorale Roanne finished fifth at 19-11 due to a 103-91 road loss against Cholet Basket. Rodrigue Beaubois led the winners with 31 points and 9 assists. Chris Monroe led Roanne with 26 points. Aaron Harper added 16 while Marc-Antoine Pellin and Samba Dia each had 10 for the guests, that trailed 48-38 at halftime. Cholet boosted its margin to 78-61 after 30 minutes and Roanne only rallied once the outcome was clear.
Le Mans finished the regular season with a 20-10 record by overwhelming Rouen 105-65 at home behind 21 points from Bluthenthal. Dee Spencer and Bobby Dixon each added 19, Alain Koffi and Antoine Diot had 12 apiece while Jeremy Leloup got 11 in an easy home win for Le Mans. A 12-0 run that Diot capped with a triple broke the game open, 38-23, early in the second quarter. Bluthenthal, Dixon and a dominant Koffi boosted Le Mans' lead to 59-38 at halftime. Rouen never recovered and Le Mans soon cruised to an impressing win. STB Le Havre finished 14th at 10-20 and avoid relegation by beating Hyeres-Toulon 79-85 on the road. Thompson paced the winners with 27 points. Marcus Slaughter posted a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds, Fabien Causeur had 12 points while Bingo Merriex got 11 for Le Havre. Slaughter and Thompson fueled a 0-18 run that gave Le Havre a 46-64 lead late in the third quarter. Hyeres-Toulon managed to get within 78-81 in the final minutes but free throws but free throws by Causeur and Merriex sealed the outcome down the stretch.
