German League, Regular Season, Game 33: April 24-26, 2009
An anticlimactic weekend in the German League saw the top two teams in the standings lose, while third-placed MEG Gottingen won to set up an exciting finish to the regular season. Walter Tigers Tubingen dominated EWE Baskets Oldenburg from the start with a 23-8 first quarter en route to an 89-79 win that dropped EWE to 25-7. Michael Haynes shined with 25 points for the Tigers. Reigning champion Alba Berlin failed to take advantage, falling 73-66 at Deutsche Bank Skyliners, who were led by Lorenzo Gordon’s 15 points and 8 rebounds. Berlin fell to 24-8. Gottingen pounced on EnBW Ludwigsburg for a 53-79 rout thanks to 18 points from Clif Brown to tie Berlin at 24-8. Oldenburg hosts Gottingen on Wednesday in a game that could spice up the race for the top spot even more. Meanwhile Brose Baskets Bamberg clinched a playoff spot with an 80-69 win over Telekom Baskets Bonn. Elton Brown paced Bamberg with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Giants Dusseldorf edged Artland Dragons 87-86 as Matt Lottich scored 17. In other games, Jeff Gibbs posted 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead ratiopharm Ulm past Paderborn Baskets 77-73, Giants Nordlingen needed overtime to edge Eisbaren Bremerhaven as Mike Gansely roared with 29 points and 15 rebounds, TBB Trier recorded a 73-58 win over the Koln 99ers and in a triple-overtime thriller, New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig bested LTi Giessen 46ers 98-94 behinds 28 points and 9 boards from Dustin Salisbery.
Reigning champion Alba Berlin failed to take advantage of a loss to first place EWE Baskets Oldenburg, falling 73-66 at Deutsche Bank Skyliners. Berlin led early in the fourth quarter and was within 1 midway through the period, but went scoreless for over three minutes as the Skyliners built a 69-62 lead and a basket by Konrad Wysocki and 2 free throws by Ilian Evitmov in the final minute sealed the win. Lorenzo Gordon led Frankfurt with 15 points and 8 rebounds, Wysocki added 12 points and Keith Simmons had 10. Casey Jacobsen paced Berlin with 14 points and both Adam Chubb and Immanuel McElroy scored 10 each. Brose Baskets Bamberg clinched a playoff spot with an 80-69 win over Telekom Baskets Bonn. Elton Brown paced Bamberg with 27 points and 13 rebounds and Demond Greene netted 25. Brown and Greene combined for 26 points as Bamberg outscored Bonn 31-19 in the opening 10 minutes and never trailed again. Predrag Suput added 12 points for the winners. E.J. Rowland paced Bonn with 18.
