Italian League, Regular Season, Game 12: December 25-28, 2008
Montepaschi Siena continued to roll atop the Italian League with 12 victories in as many games after beating Eldo Caserta 66-73, while Virtus Bologna took advantage of Bancartercas Teramo's loss to take sole possession of second place at 8-4. Four teams follow Virtus with 7-5 records. A red-hot Terrell McIntyre scored 31 points to lead Montepaschi, which used a 2-13 run at the start of the fourth quarter to break a tie and take control of the game. Lottomatica Roma used a 26-12 fourth quarter to defeat Premiata Montegranaro 88-70. In Treviso, Bobby Dixon became the hero of the day after his late free throw broke the tie for a 79-78 Benetton Treviso victory over Armani Jeans Milano. Scavolini Pesaro overwhelmed Fortitudo Bologna 99-72, while the other Bologna team, Virtus, had better luck. Virtus beat Carife Ferrara 78-63 behind double-doubles from Sharrod Ford and Roberto Chiacig. NGC Cantu downed Solsonica Rieti 88-69 with a balanced offensive effort, as five players reached double figures and Nicolas Mazzarino, Jason Rich and Sundata Gaines had 15 points each for the winners. Air Avellino picked up a 78-91 road victory over Banca Tercas Teramo. And Snaidero Udine edged Angelico Biella 80-78 as Oscar Torres led all scorers with 21 points for the winners.
Montepaschi Siena topped Eldo Caserta 66-73, but had to fight hard for the win, as it was 28-28 after a low-scoring first half and 42-42 with 11 minutes to go. But Arriel McDonald – making his Montepaschi debut – and Mcintyre scored 5 points each and Shaun Stonerook added a triple to cap a 2-13 run to start the fourth quarter and the champs remained in control until the final whistle. McIntyre had a great night with 31 points, McDonald notched 10 and Stonerook grabbed 14 rebounds. Ronald Slay paced the hosts with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Benetton survived a 79-78 thriller against Armani Jeans Milano. It was tied at 35-35 at halftime and still even at 75-75 with 50 seconds to go when Mindaugas Katelynas of Milano nailed a triple to put the guests in front. But Matteo Soragna answered with a three on the other end and after Mike Hall missed, Benetton's playmaker Dixon forced Marco Mordente to foul him with only 2 seconds left on the clock. Dixon split the free throws to seal the game as David Hawkins's desperation shot didn't fall. Judson Wallace led Benetton with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, Dixon finished with 16 points and Gary Neal had 15 for the winners. For Milano, Hall scored 18 points, Katelynas posted 16 and Hawkins 14, while Pape Sow grabbed 10 rebounds.
Lottomatica Roma defeated Premiata Montegranaro 88-70 as Sani Becirovic came off the bench to lead four scorers in double digits with 19 points and 6 assists for the winners. Andre Hutson scored 14 points, forward Rodrigo De La Fuente registered a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds and Luigi Datome added 10 points. For Montegranaro, Ricky Minard and Bryce Taylor combined for 39 points. Scavolini Pesaro ran over Fortitudo Bologna 99-72 as Michael Hicks led six scorers in double figures with 24 points for the winners. Scavolini shot 10 for 20 from behind the arc compared to Bologna's 3 for 18. Veteran star Gregor Fucka scored 18 points for Fortitudo, Jamont Gordon netted 16 and D.J. Strawberry had 15. Air Avellino beat Banca Tercas Teramo 78-91 with a balanced offensive effort as Eric Williams notched 13 points and Daniele Cinciniarini posted 12. Drake Diener had 11 points and Nikola Radulovic 10, while four other players scored at least 8 points for Avellino.
