Portuguese League Finals, Game 4: June 6, 2009
Sport Lisboa Benfica is the Portuguese League champion! Benfica lifted its first Portuguese League trophy in 14 years by sweeping the best-of-seven title series against Ovarense Dolce Vita. Benfica - the undefeated regular season champion - rounded a near-perfect domestic season by edging Ovarense 63-71 in Game 4 in Ovar on Saturday. Elvis Evora led the winners with 22 points and 8 rebounds. Sergio Ramos added 17 points for Benfica. Nuno Manarte had 17 points for Ovarense while Rolan Roberts added 14 and 9 rebounds in defeat. Ovarense led 18-17 after 10 minutes but Benfica used outstanding defense to get the lead for good. Benfica allowed just 5 points in the second quarter while Evora and Ramos helped the guests to get a double-digit lead, 23-34, at halftime. Benfica managed to keep a safe lead throughout the second half, leading 38-47 after 30 minutes. The guests sealed the outcome minutes before the final buzzer, enough for all Benfica fans to celebrate another Portuguese League title!

A new era had started in Portuguese basketball, as the federation will now organize the league. As many as 12 teams will face each other in the first phase, in which each team will face and home and away basis, as well as going against each second division team once to complete a 34-game regular season. Quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will follow to see if Ovarense Aerosoles is able to win a fourth consecutive Portuguese League title. John Waller, Greg Stempin, Rui Mota, Nuno Manarte and Jamal Basit will try to keep adding to Ovarense's dynasty. Porto Ferpinta should be its main opponent with Christian Burns, Joao Figueiredo and Kevin Martin as its main weapons. Benfica is back with Diogo Carreira and Sergio Ramos, while Vagos Lusavouga Dewalt offers Wesley Green and Dan Coleman. CAB Madeira, Belenenses Hyundai Lusifor and Lusitania Angra Patrimonio Mundial will fight to reach high in his brand new Proliga.
